Miramar vs Condado vs Old San Juan

We have found a couple of really great apartments in the Miramar area to choose from for our vacation, and I just want to get thoughts on the area. They are close to the Convention center, and have been told that you can walk to Condado in a bout 10 minutes, and that there are places to walk to close by. We are only renting a car for 4 days in the middle of our trip, so we need to be able to walk everywhere, the rest of the time. We do have an option in OSJ, and possibly one in Condado, but the Miramar ones are nicer and a little less expensive.

If you can, please tell me what you know about that area.

Thanks so much :)

I would not stay in Miramar. It is a non touristic area so at night the streets will be deserted. You will definitely don’t want to be walking at night from Miramar to Condado. Try Old San Juan or Condado instead. Even if the accommodations alternatives you have are not be as nice as Miramar, but you will have a much nicer experience in your vacation. You can also search in Isla Verde area.

We are spending a week in PR in March.

Not sure what your budget is but we found a 1 bedroom condo in Isla Verde on the beach for $100 per night taxes in. There is a pool, parking spot, washer and dryer in the unit, full kitchen....

We looked through Homeaway. This unit is #218041

Just a thought!

I agree with the post above. Miramar is not only not a touristic area, but you will need a taxi to go anywhere. You're right, Miramar is not far from the touristic areas, but it's just not convenient. This is why this area is cheaper. I would strongly suggest to look into Condado, OSJ, and Isla Verde instead.

Hi Kelli, Miramar is nice and I wouldn't mind living there. But, for a first trip, you really can't beat the Condado. Its a central location and its a perfectly walkable location with a beach and numerous hotels ( which in PR are important venues where many locals go to dine and party) restaurants, bars and shops. Its very active and one can wander easily among the people. OSJ is similar, but with a different feel and no beach.

Thank you so much. So, if we are not wanting to be around touristy areas like casinos and big hotels, but more around cafe's/ restaurants and shops that would have a PR feel instead of an American feel, would we stay in Condado or OSJ?

I've been to PR more than 20 times over 16 years and although I like Old San Juan, I've never really been tempted to stay there, in part because, OSJ fairly swarms with tourists. The Condado is m,ore typical of a Latin American beachfront neighborhood, some very nice, some not so nice. Very little has been specifically designed for tourists. There are American entities for sure, but these are generally all seen thru the prism of Puerto Rican culture ( even the Starbucks) .IMO the Condado is authentically PR. If your heart is set on a more residential neighborhood, you might consider Ocean Park which abuts the Condado.

On the other hand, almost all of the residents of OSJ are Puerto Rican and they also frequent the many restaurants and venues of OSJ. Puerto Ricans from all over the island also visit often and I am one of them, because El Viejo San Juan has a sentimental hold on all of us, as It represents the island's historical past. My dream is to one day be able to stay at the El Convento Hotel for a week and just take my time savoring all of OSJ instead of rushing in and out in a day or two. Yes, there are more tourists concentrated there, only because OSJ has the largest cruise ship terminal in the Caribbean and when the ships dock the tourists are out. But the old city is plenty big to accommodate everyone.

I agree with the above posts regarding Miramar.

OSJ vs Condado: both have their fair share of tourists and locals. Condado is more miami south beach-like, and OSJ is more new orleans french quarter-like. I would pick OSJ.

You should be be concerned about the casinos we have here. The casinos are not flashy, but more discreet and are located inside some hotels, with no flashing light signs outside. You could vacation in Codado or Isla Verde and not even notice where they are.
