Dress Code

Hello. We will be traveling to San Juan for the first time and will be staying at the Caribe Hilton. I have read some things online about how there is a dress code in a lot of places, men not being able to wear shorts and sandals. We aren't looking to go to crazy fancy restaurants or anything, we are going more for a low key relaxing on the beach style vacation. I will have no problem dressing up a bit more, I am more concerned about my boyfriend. He usually only packs shorts and sandals. Should I pack nicer clothes for him or will he be ok with just shorts?

It all depends on where you go. Nicer restaurants do not allow shorts nor sandals (on men). I believe that the same applies to casinos. At night, almost everywhere you go you will see people (mostly locals) dressed up. It's part of the culture to dress up at night. You may not want to feel out of place.

Dressing down in the pool areas, beach areas and beach venues is ok. San Juan is a city and at night Puerto Ricans dress up not down when they go out.

At least bring a a shirt and a pair of long chinos, dockers or kaki and loafers to fit into the informal dressing at night.

A guayabera, long dark pants, good shoes, will get you in almost anywhere on the island.

I would bring a little dressier clothing for the evening, because you'll feel underdressed. Puerto Ricans love to get dressed going to Hotels and Restaurants. Woman love tide, short dresses and the heel can not be high enough
