Day Trips

I have a free car rental for the week. What would be some good day trips from San Juan. Wife, kids, 16, 17. We all like adventure, nature and eating at local hole in the wall restaurants that have good food. Looking mostly for inexpensive options - ie. drive through rain forest, mountains, hike to waterfall, etc.

El Yunque. I wish we had done this on our trip but we really didn't have enough time as we wanted to just relax. We'll hit it up on our next trip to PR.

Take a ride into the central mountains and eat at the famous "pork highway" in Guavate and sample Puerto Rican roast pig at one of the many restaurants.

--Cueva Ventana in Arecibo

--Rio Camuy caverns

--Arecibo radiotelescope (largest in the world)

--ferry ride over the Culebra Island to visit world famous Flamenco Beach

--Caja de Muertos Island state park in Ponce

--Seralles house & La Cruceta tower overlooking the city of Ponce

Guavate is awesome, especially on a Saturday or Sunday.

The rainforest EARLY...before all the crowds hit. I would start with Big Tree to La Mina Falls and then Angelito all the way to the end where the river is. More rain forest hiking if you want or head down to the kioskos and Balneario Monseratte. Then on to the town of Luquillo for Playa Azul or La Pared beach and dinner at Pasta Y Pueblo. That would be a full day.
