torn between three hotels - help!

I am torn between Hilton Caribe, Renaissance La Concha, and Marriott Stelaris.

My husband and I are mid-thirties with no kids. We are looking for a hotel with great views, swimmable ocean (we like waves, but don't want to swim with red flags), and decent pools. We aren't drinkers, so don't care about the price of drinks. We love to walk everywhere, and would like to be able to walk to restaurants (not eat at the hotel). We are using the hotel as a base for going hiking in the rainforest, kayaking at illumination bay, etc. We rented a car, so don't care about tours from hotels.

I'm torn because the reviews are all over the place. I'd like a comfortable, clean, updated room with views of the ocean. the Stelaris has balconies, so I think I'd love that, but it is far more expensive. is it really worth the extra 100 bucks a night?

can anyone offer a suggestion? or, am I worrying for nothing because the three hotels are virtually interchangeable and I should just take the cheapest?

thanks

The Caribe Hilton has a protected cove and not a lot of waves, La Concha usually has rough wave action and undercurrents and the Marriott Stellaris is right down the street from La Concha. The best beach is in Isla Verde.

No one should swim at La Concha. Many people have drown there and many, many more almost drown due to the undercurrents. It claimed another victim today. It is really tragic.

The Caribe Hilton is in an area by itself, not many choices for food, but you can walk to Condado in about 15min.

La Concha is very modern, more recently renovated and appeals to the chic crowd. The Marriott is a bit more dated. Both La Concha and the Marriott are close to restaurants and nightlife. Besides their looks and beach situation (which i can't comment on) they are interchangeable, so if you pick the cheapest you will not go wrong.

thanks everyone. I'm leaning toward the marriott - due to the balconies and nearness to restaurants. not sure about swimming in the ocean, though.

Stick to swimming in the pool. We were in PR 3 weeks ago and spent one day on the beach right near the Marriot and i'm a decent swimmer and very comfortable in water but wouldn't go any deeper than waist deep due to the at times massive waves and could certainly feel the undertow as well. Go out deeper and you are risking your life.

For relaxation, quiet elegancr and proximity to Old San Juan, I'd pick the Caribe Hilton. There's no casino there which keeps the vibe tranquil. I love it there. Otherwise, La Concha, very hip, GREAT beautiful beach area, with-it location. I'm figuring that if you're in your 30's you'll love it!

The vibe at the Marriott Stellaris is too hectic for

me.

The beach at both La Concha and Stellaris is often rough, which makes it not swimmable. Caribe Hilton's is a shallow lagoon, but the hotel is not located within a short walking distance to shops and restaurants.

I'm not sure how set you are on the hotels you mentioned, but if a swimmable beach is an important factor, perhaps a hotel in Isla Verde would be a better choice. Both Intercontinental and El San Juan are very nice, have very nice pools, are located within a short distance to restaurants and shops, and are right on the Isla Verde beach, which is a nice swimmable beach.

I agree with paris7002, try to look for a hotel in Isla Verde. The beach is much better, there are many walkable restaurants for all budgets, and the Isla Verde beach area has a lot of fun amenities: beach massages, jet ski rental, banana boat rides, parasiling and others. So if you haven't made your reservations yet I suggest booking at Isla Verda; both the Intercontinental and El San Juan hotel are great choices.

If beach activities are a must on your vacation list, stay in the Isla Verde area. This is in the town of Carolina, for when you do your booking search.
