Seeking Advice for San Juan & Puerto Rico Xmas Week, Thanks.

Greetings. Planning 2-week vacation 14 to 28 December 2013. Would appreciate any insights from locals or frequent guests, especially to the following:

(1) 14-21 December will take a cruise (great price): estimated time from San Juan airport to cruise ship port by taxi at 500/530 in the evening?

(2) 21-28 December planning a week on the island. Some brief familiarity with Condado Beach area (Marriott Resort & Casino). Prefer to rent an apartment in the area and make light breakfasts and lunches and collect information on nearby notable restaurants for dinner. Advice as to which buildings to consider. Especially would appreciate (covered) balcony with ocean views and access to washer/dryer. Swimming pool might be a positive (? time of year). We are in our late 60s and don't do ocean swimming (just beach walking) and take a cautious approach to sun exposure. Would like to hear waves on beach, but certainly not yelling party-goers at 300 am. Like the idea of an apartment rental (even one too large to obtain correct amenities) to have location and view, as no guaranty of view/balcony at hotel.

(3) Like to be near resort hotel to be assured option of Xmas eve and Xmas day dinners or buffet (are local restaurants open on this holiday) and understand that local tours can be arranged through hotel concierge.

(4) Suggested resources to determine entertainment (music or English language) activities scheduled 21/27 December 2013?

(5) Am I missing out on other island resorts we should consider for a 7-night stay, or will Condado Beach provide best variety of options (old town, museums, concerts, live music venues, tours (caves, rain forest, others?), and variety of restaurants?

Any information, advice, personal experiences greatly appreciated.

Ashford Imperial Condo, across from Marriott, would be great for you. Studio apartments, pool, small

fitness room, laundry room on 2nd floor, 24 hour security. Be careful about rental agents, as some apts.

may not be in good condition. Check out Ronnies Rentals, as I know he handles some nice places. I rent

from friends and don't know if their place is available. The Ferre Performing Arts Center and the Conservatory

of Music, both nearby, may be having things you would enjoy.

Thanks for the advice. Any idea how to locate building with larger rental units (plus, balcony, beach/ocean view, swimming pool, in-unit or in-building washer/dryer)? Really prefer to stay in Condado area versus Isle Verde. Am indeed approaching unit selection with a great deal of caution with default of a hotel room if necessary.

Also, any one with experience regarding restaurants etc. on Xmas Eve/Xmas Day?

Be aware the Christmas is the busiest time of the year. Everyone comes home to spend the holidays with family. Expect to pay rack rate or even holiday rates on rental units. Reserve quickly. Try Greatrentals.com and VRBO.com. They have some selection criterea you can put in to narrow your search. Use Google Maps, sattelite and street view to check the places out. Good luck..

Ronnie's Rentals is out! Why? Accepting the reality that the Xmas/New Years weeks are high demand, one would want to make arrangements now, yes? First, have determined that furnished apartments rent monthly for the price of one week vacation rental, so you would think that there would be some competition to attract multiple one-week vacation rentals, but Ronnie's will open their units to one-week rentals only 60 days prior to arrival date, so that previous reservations do not disrupt other potential (longer term?) rentals (even with a Saturday to Saturday reservation!). I'd think that each owner should make their own decision? Obviously we will shortly be in the "one-in-hand versus two-in-the-bush" situation. Also, am pretty amazed at the number of people in May/June who did not even respond! (Maybe they will use units for the holidays and don't feel that they need to be considerate and provide a reply? It seems that one ideal building is Condado del Mar -- anyone out there know a unit owner or rental agent interested in a Xmas week rental (21/28 December)?

Kind regards and Thanks.

check out this website: www.clasificadosonline.com look for the short term rental, most apartments listed here are for the weekend or a week.

But this website does not warranties apartment conditions, and you can not see date availability; you will be dealing directly with owners. The good thing is that most are furnished. A furnished beach front apartment rate in El Condado area could run up to $1,500 for the week, specially for the holidays.

So for that kind of money I would reconsider a hotel (clean room everyday, no need to make bed, hear the beach, see the beach, have a pool). Most hotels have a coffe maker and a small fridge in the room.

For a light breakfast and lunch you could buy some stuff at a grocery store and have it in your room. Heck, buy a $9.99 toaster, and you can have waffles, toasted bagels, and bread anytime.

24 y 25 th of december are big holidays on the island and most restaurants will be close. The hotels and touristic restaurants will be open, so you won't starve. But they usually do not have special buffets for these days.

On the 24th many stores and restaurants close early (6-8pm), so make sure to have dinner early, or you will have to eat at a hotel.

Sorry I gave you a bum steer on Ronnies rental! I know the owner of two of the units he handles and they are

in great condition. Many people who live full-time out on the island, also keep a place in the city and may

want them for the holidays. The Condado del Mar is a lovely place, but don't know any agents to suggest.

If I come up with anything interesting from contacts, will let you know.
