Having 2nd thoughts on htel choice.

My wife and I are in our early fifties and are going to San Juan in early Jan. I have booked the La Concha but now am not so sure after reading about the loud music at the pool as well as the lobby bar. We are not prudes and I enjoy my cocktails but am thinking of booking the Doubletree which I can get for about 40.00 dollars a night cheaper, and I am aware the Doubletree is not oceanfront. Thoughts please and thank you.

We recently stayed at LaConcha oceanview suite on the 5th floor and I was worried because of the reviews here about noise, but we honestly did not hear the loud music, etc from our room. And the adult only pool is very quiet too! We had a great time and loved the hotel view! Basically what I'm saying is if you have the right room, one near the ocean all you'll hear is the waves :)

If you're planning on swimming at the beach, you might want to reconsider. Apparently it is dangerous due to an undertow.

We stayed at La Concha last January. We were several couples in our early to mid 40's. The bar in the lobby was loud and crowded on the Saturday night of our stay. We were in the casino until at least 1:00am and then went to bed and were not disturbed by the noise. There are also other choices in the area for a drink, including the Vanderbiilt hotel down the block which is much more mellow. The other nights it was not loud at all. We did not find it loud by the pool but most of our time was spent on the beach. Also, there are several pool areas and two of them are fairly quiet ( but small). I would not hesitate to stay there again.

Regarding the beach, the water has waves similar to what we have on the Jersey or Long Island coast. It did not keep me ( or lots of other people) out of the water but if you are seeking very calm water, this is not what you will find

We just returned from a three night stay at La Concha. We were on the 9th floor of the new tower and it was so peaceful. We stayed Tuesday through Thursday night and had a wonderful time. Lobby bar is lively, but the new tower is far removed from it.

I am debating between Marriott Stellaris and La Concha. I will be travelling with my 9 year old son. Which one has better services at the pool and beach? Also which offers better facilties for marriott rewards member?

Any preferences? I am thinking to stay in Marriott Courtyard for 3 days when I will be travelling to Fajardo and OSJ and then move to either Stellaris / La Concha to relax.

La Concha and Stellaris are on the side of the island where the beach is "rougher". There was a red flag at the hotel, but both children and adults (me included) were playing in the surf. La Concha is probably geared more for adults. We talked to a couple on a tour and they said Stellaris has a water slide and may be more geared to families. Read the forums and look for posts including family.

By all means do not let your child swim at the beach behind La Concha without CLOSE supervision. That beach has dangerous undercurrents and at least 3 tourists have drowned there this year. The beach Isla Verde area hotels is safe for kids.

If you are staying with a 9 year old, reconsider for a hotel in the Isla Verde area. The beach is more tranquil, plus there are fun water activities (banana boat, parasailing, jet ski) that you and your kid could enjoy. Most of the hotels in this area have nice pools also.

rfn44- the Double tree hotel is located on the far side of the Condado area, bit farther from all the main tourist restaurants and shops. So add at least an additional 5-7 min walking time to actually be in the Condado area. But, not to say, it is close to some less tourist restaurants (Bistro Paris, Blonda) and there are many others on Loiza Street; it is also walking distance to the museum of Modern art. Plus, there is nearby a grocery store, Walgreens, and you can walk to El Meson, which is a Puerto Rican fast food for sandwiches, breakfast and great coffee.

So, if you are planning on renting a car or using taxis, the Double tree should be fine. But be aware, that this hotels caters for business travelers so for night time entertainment you would have to go to the Condado or Isla Verde area. I don't know if the hotel has a casino.

JABSHAH, the Courtyard by Marriott is on the San Juan area's beast beach, Isla Verde Beach and it is a quieter area than the Marriott Stellaris and La Concha which have very rough water and an undertow where people have drowned. Aside from that, the Couryard by Marriott is only a couple of miles from both the Marriott Stellaris and La Concha and does not put you any closer to Fajardo which is on the east side of Puerto Rico about 45 minutes away. La Concha and the Marriot Stellaris are the closer hotels to OSJ. If you have a rental car, the distance from all of these hotels is negligible. They are all in the Metro area.

Thanks for the feedback - I will certainly look for alternate hotel. Since I am planning to do day trips out of San Juan, I was staying on Miramar Marriott for 3 days and then wanted to move to beach front hotel for last 4 days. Reviews of Marriott on Isla Verde beach are not positive - have you stayed there or know any other hotel on Isla Verde?
