Hiking In Puerto Rico - Suggestions

My family of 4 (includes 8 and 10 year old boys) are coming into San Juan a day before our 7-day cruise on the Valor in June. We are going to rent a car and explore the island. What are some of the nature highlights away from San Juan and OSJ that are must see (hikes, snorkeling, etc)? Also where would be the best place to stay to be close to these activities? Thanks.

The best of hiking would be in ElYunque, the rain forest about an hour from SanJuan. There are several trails depending on how much time you want to spend there. The visitor center is very good also so you can learn something about what you are seeing. You could spend the entire day there but it will get exhausting. You could combine half a day there and half a day at the beach +\- snorkeling but that will be a tiring day too.

A place close to the rain forest:

At the shore, but a reasonable distance away:

There are also other state forests in Puerto Rico where you can hike, if you'd like more suggestions. El Yunque is the most popular and gets the most crowds.

There is the Guajataca state forest on the norhwest side of the island in Isabela. The Rio Abajo state forest in Arecibo and the rare Guanica Dry Forest in Guanica among others.

prexplorer- do you have a map or any info on the trails at Rio Abajo? When we went a few years ago the ranger said the trails were gone/abandoned. There looked like there was something left by the camping area but it was washed out. Would love to go but don't want to get lost/waste time. Also, where do you suggest we park for trails?

rgator- with 2 little kids, you probably want to go to the trails on N191, where there are rangers and open trails. In that case, you might want to look for lodging on the north side of El Yunque. And with only one day, stick to El Yunque. That way you won't be wasting a lot of time driving when you can be hiking and then going to the beach and then maybe the Fajardo biobay. With only 1 night, try Ceiba Country Inn.

The place in the rain forest that was suggested to you (cubuy) is on the south side of El Yunque and is about 1 hr drive from any open trails (though they do have one of their own that goes to the river).

Hmmm.....sorry to hear that. Sadly, things are always changing in PR and with the government being bankrupt and the economy on a downturn since 2006, there is no money for maintaining or updating the state park facilities, trails, signs, etc. What condition is the Guajataca Park and the biosphere in Guanica like these days?

Trails at both Guajataca and the Guanica dry forest are in good shape.

I was hoping that you had new good news because I really want to check out some caves at Rio Abajo, but haven't bothered since trails were unusable last time we went.
