Cruise ship excursion- want to see as much as possible!

We are in our 30's, active, and would like to see as much as possible. We will be in port from 8am-4pm. This means we would have from 8:15am (get off the boat first) and be back around 3:30pm. We want to see come of the rainforest, explore old San Juan, and a fort.

1.) should we do it all on our own? Rent a car?

2.) should we hire a tour company to see the rainforest and then see if they can drop us in old San Juan? If so which one do you recommend?

3.) is there a tour that would see all the above?

Thank you!

If you go the rain forest ( El Yunque) then you probably won't have time to visit the forts in OSJ. You should be able to leave the ship at 8:00 am. However, it depends on which ship you are on for accessibility to attractions and transportation. El Yunque is a good 45-minute drive from OSJ. You could book a tour to the rain forest (make sure that it allows you to swim in waterfalls if you want to do this). Afterwards, visit one of the forts in OSJ. San Cristobal is closest to the pier. You could spend an entire day in OSJ seeing both forts, walking the outside of the old city walls, shopping, etc.

You have to choose one. If you rent a car, you will have about 2hrs in El Yunque. Consider traffic, getting car, possibility of getting lost and arrival back to ship, which is well before 4pm. But it is doable.

Time will be better spent in OSJ. You will have time to see both forts, walk around, eat some great food and explore. Plus OSJ is much more unique than the rainforest.

Stick to OSJ. You could do Segway tours or bike tours in OSJ, and the Forts. Really very nice to walk in OSJ and many small hidden treasures, and great picture opportunities. This months Que Pasa magazine, has a small detail of many picture opportunities in OSJ. It is available on the web.

At least go to El Morro fortress, once you reach the main entrance, ask about the available guided tours.

Due to driving time (45 min each way) to El Yunque, I wouldn't recommend going there. From the barely 7 hours there you would spend 1.5 hr driving. That is almost 25% of your time in a car.

Walk OSJ and have lunch there. Enjoy :)

I would check with the Cruise Ship first to see when you'll get off. I think it takes much more then 15 minutes. You have to go trough Customs.

Thanks so much for all the advice! We decided not to do the rainforest. OSJ and the fortresses will be great. Any specific places we must check out? What do y'all suggest for lunch? :-D

See both forts, the governor's mansion and capitol (reservations required for these 2), museums and galleries. Great walking tour ideas at puertoricodaytrips site.

Food: la cueva del mar, cinema bar, cafe puerto rico, cafe la princesa
