My thoughts on the Wyndham Rio Mar

We just got back from a wonderful 4 days in Puerto Rico....

We stayed at the Rio Mar for those 4 days and here are my thoughts:

Pros:

1) BEAUTIFUL beach

Lots of waves, beautiful warm water, plenty of chairs and umbrellas...and quiet, too!

2) Spacious, clean rooms

We had no problems with the housekeeping....our room was clean when we arrived and it was cleaned regularly while we were there

3) Great pool

My son loved the slide.... and we spent hours each day in the pool. There is a separate adult pool that had a nice waterfall....but we never went in it....

4) The grounds were immaculate and the resort was very classy

Cons:

1) The food was INSANELY expensive and not nearly good enough to justify even half the price. One afternoon, my husband and I shared a chicken caesar salad at Club Coqui (by the pool) and our son had a child's mac-n-cheese, then one soda each... That bill came close to $40 with tip... it was outrageous!

2) The front desk employees were not very nice or professional. We had this one snippy front desk clerk that rolled her eyes at us when we told her that the $120 they added to our bill for airport transfers should be taken off because we paid for transfers with our vacation package. She ROLLED her eyes! There were a few other issues with them where they made sarcastic remarks.....we were none too pleased...

3) The casino was closed as we were told it would be...and that was an inconvenience---but they did provide a free shuttle to the gran melia resort's casino...

**********************************************************

Overall we were very very pleased..... We did eat off the resort grounds two of the nights and that was much more reasonable...

I miss PR terribly and we can't wait to go back agaiN!

NIce report. Glod you enjoyed Puerto Rico. As you can see now it is a pretty large island. Lots to see and do. We have gone there probably 30+ times over the last 20 years. Now we just rent a casa afor the week and park. That is unless there is some screaming resort deal, and that has happened. Some people have been getting the El Conquistador for $99 a night in August.

Wow... the El Con for $99.... What's the situation w/the beach there, though?? It's not beach front, right?? Is there some kind of shuttle or something? We passed the gate for El Con on the way to Fajardo for the bio bay tour...

The beaches apparently vary so much... The "beach" at the former Paradisio resort was...well... not quite a beach... and it was filled with coral.... and there was barely a beach front...maybe like 15 feet of it.....my son would not have been able to enjoy it as much as the beach at the Rio Mar...

I can't wait to go back and explore more of the island!

You should post this review on the TripAdvisor hotel review. It would help other patrons of the resort and the resort's management should also be tuning in.

My wife and I stayed 5 nights at the Rio Mar last week - Mon thru Fri - and had only good experiences with the front desk staff. Maybe an unfortunate case of luck of the draw for you.

We were initially assigned a two-bed room; but they remedied that and moved us to a king room within 5 minutes. High levels of service throughout our stay - and we were a "free" stay (used Starpoints before the property changed from Westin to Wyndham).

I agree with your comments on the Rio Mar food prices. But when leaving the resort, there's not much to find other than American fast food (many McD's, BK, KFCs, etc) or Sizzler unless you want to take a chance on what appeared to be dives (probably many with great food). For those looking to stay and eat at Rio Mar, buy an Entertainment book. It includes BOGO offers for 3 of the restaurants plus one for golf. The food was still too expensive, but it helped ($85 savings for the $20 investment in the book at half price). Also used the book in OSJ and a few other places.

The beach and pools are definitely nice at the Rio Mar. The brown sand was hot; but everything was clean and there were always plenty of chairs.

Only problem we encountered was noise from the hall and other rooms. The concrete walls are great against hurricanes - but not so good with noise control.

I would love more info about the Ocean Villas at the Wyndham Rio Mar. What kind of condition are they in? Are the furnishings new or updated? How do the units compare to the hotel rooms? Am I better off in a unit closer to the hotel or farther away? We are strongly considering staying in the villas at Christmas, and it is quite expensive. I don't want to make a mistake.

THANK YOU!!!

We just got back from PR and had a great time. We stayed at Ocean Villas at the Rio Mar and would highly recommend them. The condos are a short walk from the hotel. We had the two pools and the beach almost to ourself (we were there the last week of June). The seafood restaurant was our favorite (Aqua Luna) and it is located at Ocean Villas. I will try to post a trip report soon.

To rede2gonow and dian:

It sounds like you had a wonderful vacation! Was your villa a 1,2, or 3 bedroom? Were the furnishings nice? Was it large enough? I have seen some reviews that complained that they looked outdated.

Thank you!

We stayed in a 1 BR, the living room sofa pulled out into a queen bed also. The furnishings were very nice, no complaints at all. I would not consider it small either. Since the units are individually owned I would expect the furnishings could vary from unit to unit. I think I read somewhere that most of them have been upgraded recently though - things like 42" flat screen TV's in all the units, etc.
