El Yunque Closed Due to Hurricane Earl

Press release from the folks in El Yunque dated August 29 ...

Forest Supervisor Pablo Cruz announced that all facilites at El Yunque National Forest will be closed as of 6:00 PM today until further notice due to the passing of Hurricane Earl near the island.

We encourage everyone to monitor updates from the National Weather Service to obtain the most current weather advisories. We will send out further information when we are able to reopen Forest facilities to the public.

El Yunque is still closed to the public.

Here's the update from the Forest Service from earlier today ...

"We are in the process of assessing damages to the Forest resulting from the passing of Hurricane Earl - the Forest remains closed until further notice... "

It's not from a source on the web. I get updates via email directly from the Forest Service. I'll summarize the info here when I get it.

The latest information is that Road 988, Angelito Trail and El Portal Visitor Center will re-open on Friday (Sep 3). Everything else in El Yunque is remaining temporarily closed (which means you can't go farther up Road 191 than El Portal).

Thanks Ray. I think this type of advisory is necessary. Last time I went to Puerto Rico, the rain was consistent and that could create a sudden flow of water and again depending the volume of precipitation. This advise has to be taken in consideration for you safety.
