you can do a search for more info and answers to this in the past, but you have to answer some questions either way. are you young and like bars/drinking? do you want solitude? quiet? would you like ocean views? how log are you staying? will you have a car?

if you have a car, id say rent in the hills, Villa Borinques or Los chivos or Lujan or Monte Carmello. if you wont have a car and need to walk to some beaches and the restaurants etc i say Esperanza. Just remember many of the homes in Esperanza are close together and the neighborhood can get noisy.

The island is 4 miles wide! You are never more than a few mi.es from either.

Thank you for this information, we are active but not young.....not into partying or hanging out at bars. Where we live in NE is peaceful and quiet on water. We enjoy kayaking, hiking, snorkeling, etc. It does seem that Esparenza is a bit of an active town? Currently searching the north.....Isabel.

Like Franki and Wholegrain have already mentioned the island is small and Esperanza can be noisy. First and foremost I feel you need to decide if your going to get a car, I personally would recommend a car. We go into Isabel to get groceries and dine out. We go to Esperanza to grab a mid-day meal or enjoy a drink later in the evening when the Malecon is busy and everyone is partying. The proximity to either town is not relevant if you have a car and if you have a car you'll probably be in both at leat once if not more. Now if you don't have a car a I would have to agree with Franki that Esperanza might be your best bet. The reason for this is that your not going to see many nice "swimming" beaches on the north side around Isabel and even with staying in Esperanza your very limited on what you can get to by foot. There are homes for rent all over the island and many are quite reasonably priced. The island more or less has a high ridge running down the middle of it with Isabel lying on the lower north side coast and Esperanza lying of the low south side coast. You've got Atlantic waters with Isabel and Caribbean waters with Esperanza. The very best beaches are found east of Esperanza in the refuge. To reach them you really need a car, although there are some limited options (i.e. publicos, scooteres, bikes). When you look at google maps and see an aerial shot of Vieques look for those crescent shaped snow white beaches, those are the quintessential Caribbean beach fronts. You can see how the two towns lay in relation to those spots.

Hope this helps some.

Thank you. Everything I have read, yes we most definitely will have a car. It does sound like Esperanza is more for people who don't mind crowds or noise. We prefer the quiet laid back atmosphere and will drive to most places.

We have always enjoyed Villa Borinquen for it being so quiet, great views, decent walking beaches close by and only minutes to Isabela for groceries and such. As long as you have a car, you will be happy. Enjoy your trip! :)
