culebra vs vieques and where to stay?

we are a family of six. one child who is three. we want a week of vacation and are looking for a house by the water. everything seems really full. we are coming mid to end feb. i cannot decide where to go. i keep hearing different things. one question i have is it seems alot of the rentals are not near the water. does it matter. we do not want to have to all pile into the car to get anywhere nice. where to stay on either island that has a little action but is mellow. thanks

Tim,

Over Thanksgiving we went to both Vieques and Culebra. They are both great but different in many ways. However, one of the ways that they are similar is that there are few accomodations on the beach, or at least beaches that are good for swimming and children. There are no large resorts on either island. If you are looking for places with swim up bars and umbrella drinks served on the beach, you are looking at the wrong islands. Especially in Vieques, you will be driving to the beach. On Culebra, getting a room on Flamenco would be your best bet.

You should also be aware that February is the HIGH season in the Caribbean and consequently the busiest period for tourists. For our PR trip, we reserved about 4 months in advance. In contrast, we will be visiting St. Barths next month and these reservations were made nearly a year ago.

Good luck!

This 3-bedroom house is available Feb. 17-24. Not by the water but fabulous views. vacationrentals.com/vacation-rentals/19036.h…

For Vieques, you might also consider Ababor Suites east of Isabel II - it is right by the water. Not a swimming beach however - because the part close to the shore is not deep enough. But the location is great if you just want to hang out and relax by the water. You will have to pile into the car to get to any other place though - it is more than a mile from town.
