Credit Cards

This may seem like a dumb question, but having been to some other Caribbean islands, we have had some issues with credit cards. Is American Express used widely on the island or not? On some islands it is not accepted at all, is that the case?

No, amex is not widely accpted, and does not give the best exchange rate. I reccomend using VISA, you will not have any problems.

I see you are from Scotland...that might make a difference.

When Americans use AMEX the merchants charge in dollars, by converting the currency thenselves using any rate they wish. US AMEX won't accept charges in currency other than US dollars. You will have to check w/your AMEX card to find out more.

If you use a VISA (or Master Card) your card's bank will convert the charge for you and most will also charge a small fee. The conversion will be at the spot rate.

Also Discover is not taken on the island.
