Windjammer Landing v Coconut Bay - any advice please

Hi,

First timers travelling from the UK to St Lucia (actually first time to Caribbean) planning on travelling during February half term 2018. A family of 4, 2 adults and 2 girls 9 and 4.

Probably only get to stay for a week, it’s for my 40th birthday so a special trip that I’m looking forward to. I’m struggling to make a decision over the resorts Windjammer and Coconut Bay and which will suit our needs better.

We enjoy vising restaurants both on and off site. What is in the vicinity of each resort? Can you take a stroll out of the resort and pay for a meal off resort if we fancy? This could be a decision maker as I can get itchy feet after a few days.

How long is the transfer to Windjammer? Whilst a long transfer with kids is not ideal if this appears the better property this will not put me off.

The wind at Coconut Bay. Is this an issue whilst holidaying in this resort? I keep reading comments about it. Does it make the weather rather cool in February? If the weather is calmer at Windjammer and less windy this could again be a decision maker.

We’re not into swimming in the sea but enjoy a pretty beach to stroll along and let the kids play in the sand. Presuming both resorts are fine to do this and the beaches are pretty Caribbean beaches? First time in the Caribbean I’m desperate to see some pretty beaches.

I believe kids facilities are good at both resorts. I’d appreciate any comments in this regard. My girls love organised activities and getting involved.

Any other opinions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks

Sarah

Hi Sarah - I have stayed at both over the years. The Windjammer has a superb children's club. It is close to many restaurants that are a taxi ride away. If you walk out the back exit of the resort you can walk without fear of being run over and go down to the main road to catch the local bus.

As St. Lucia is a volcanic island the beaches are not the pristine white you will find on islands such as Aruba or others that have a dry climate. That being said, they are lovely nonetheless.

Coconut Bay has a great water area for the kids but the rooms are not of the same caliber as Windjammer. You can choose to cook meals at Windjammer as there is a full kitchen in almost every unit. Coconut Bay is all inclusive only. Coconut Bay was once a Club Med and the room size reflects that. Very small bathrooms and the rooms, although comfortabloe, are not overly spacious. Coconut Bay is directly across the street from the airport so a 5 minute transfer versus at least an hour to Windjammer.

Ultimately depends on price, what your needs are and what you believe will work best for you. Both are good just different.

I own timeshare at Windjammer and have not stayed at Coconut Bay. windjammer is a great family resort and half term is always very busy. The watersports there are very good and I think better than at coconut bay due to the better sailing conditions. Also there is no problem with seaweed. Windjammer is s huge resort and many villas have plunge pools and are laid out so that families have privacy with separate balconies and en suite facilities. Some of the older villas are in need of refurbishment (mine being one) so best to check you have a refurbished one when booking. We had friends having to move due to water seeping up through their floor two weeks ago!

That said, the staff are great and plenty of food options. Taxis are pricey but a 15 minute ride to Rodney Bay will give you plenty of food choices. Castries is worth a visit too and plenty of food options in the day. Pigeon island has s great little restaurant and not far from Windjammer. Also look st Bay Gardens Beach Resort as centrally located on Reduit Beach and they have family accommodation there too...
