LOL (title cannot be in all capital letters)

i am just an old F--art who has worked hard and played hard all my life. I am now now trying to retire hard.

We love St Lucia and go there for at least ten weeks every year.

Have done so for a decade.

We are not tourists; we come home to St Lucia every year.

I enjoy this forum; one can almost visualize a posters home environment by their comments.

One thing I do not understand however is this LOL

It's use seems to be increasingly all the time.

Just what does it mean?

LOL is internet-speak for Laugh Out Loud.

Thank you Tinpshr

I have LOL'd a lot since receiving your reply.

You come from a beautiful state. We have close friends who live on a lake near Enfield up near Hanover and Lebanon.

Lakes and mountains; it just does not get any better than that!

Hey SLE,

I love ROFL, I've never heard that one and will be using it a lot in the future I'm sure.

Newcomer,

When I write LOL I actually mean, "Lots of laughter." Some things are just too, too funny. Glad you're enjoying what I'm sure is a well earned retirement. 10 weeks in SLU is a great way to spend it. Enjoy each and every day!!

I guess we can all show our age by our lack of understanding of internet acronyms, myself included. My favourite one is one my teenage daughter told me. When she is talking with her friends on line and types POS, it means Parent Over Shoulder.

Cheers!

POS? I love it! Text messaging seems to be a universal language.

It would be a very interesting doctoral project in linguistics (and maybe one someone has done) to investigate whether or not text messaging differs in various English-speaking countries.

And to carry that a step further, to investigate whether different cultures and languages have developed text shorthand for similar phrases or concepts.

OK, the geek in me is showing.....sorry, but this is a fascinating topic.

Enstedda,

There was a great thread on the Jamaica forum on the topic of internet acronyms. It was the best I've ever seen explaining ever one you'll ever read on TA and then some. Sorry I can't find it but after 1,000 posts they start automatically deleting so unfortunately I can't include the link to that thread. You can try the search mode to find it.
