Off a cruise ship for the day...

Will be in St Lucia for a day. We plan to sight see, ie: Volcano, Waterfalls, Pitons, and rainforest. The ship offers many tour choices. For about $100 per person we could see a bit of each listed above. Would we be better off to book a tour with a local company or individual in St. Lucia? Is so any recommendations?

Any idea as to what we should expect to pay? Thanks, Travelman...

You can hire a private taxi for about $150 or so for the two of you and do the trip at your own pace rather than through the cruise line. There will be many taxi drivers wanting your business and waiting at the cruise port to whisk you away. They will have pictures of what they can offer you and they'll offer you different options according to your wants and desires. All Lucians are proud of their island and do a great job of showing you around so it's not necessary to arrange ahead of time unless you are more comfortable doing that.

If you check out the Trip Advisor Reviews, you'll come up with several good guides/tours that will give you a better tour at a lower cost. From tripadvisor.com, just put in a search for St. Lucia tours. We're going with Spencer Ambrose because he offers more of what we were looking for, but Cosul and James also get great marks.

Also check the Cruise Critic boards for recommendations of companies that work fairly exclusively with cruise passengers. Severl excellent recommendations there for both companies and tours.

Spencer Ambrose, Cosol Tours, James Touring, Frank's Touring, Joe Knows Tours, More Than a Cab, etc are just a few and all are in the $65-$70 US range for tour, transport, entrance fees, lunch and drinks.

Enjoy your visit!

I just wanted to mention that one of the highlights of our visit to Soufriere was Tet Paul Trail. It as an easy 45 minute hike along a ridge that is 2000ft above sea level. From the trail there are amazing views of both Pitons - the steps to the first lookout are fondly called "Stairway to Heaven" and there's an observation platform that gives you a 360 degree view of the surrounding region.

Also not to be missed is the mudbath at Sulphur Springs. If you've ever wanted a chance to a have a therapeutic volcanic mineral & mudbath, this is the place to do it! There are change facilities and showers - for the extra $3 on top of the cost of the tour of Sulphur Springs ($13USD pp total) it is well worth it for this wonderful, unique experience. Bring old bathing suits and a dark towel if you go - the mud doesn't completely wash out - it is very black due to the high iron sulphate content.

We took the Land & Sea tour with Spencer Ambrose in October and did not regret choosing him. As we toured the island by mini bus he showed us all the points of interest and even stopped at a couple of roadside stands to purchase local foods for us to taste. Admission was included for our stops at the waterfall and the volcano. After a local boxed lunch we went snorkeling at Jalousie Beach, quite amazing to look up at the Pitons from the water. We returned to the port by boat and for us the boat ride was the best part of the day. St. Lucia is absolutely beautiful and the view from the water is outstanding. The driver showed us the bat cave, the local villages, and then took us into Marigot Bay and showed us homes of the famous. Although it was a rainy day, we were not disappointed and would definitely use Spencer Ambrose next time we visit. He told us he also does private tours if someone wants a more personal guide.
