Resort with teens

Deciding between St. Lucia and St. Thomas for a late July or early August vacation. Our son is 15 and daughter 19. We like 4 or 5 star resorts within walking distance of shops/restaurants and on the beach. We want to be close to activities such as ziplining, horseback riding, boat tours, and any type of adventurous tour. We like to go out on a tour everyday and don't like to sit on the beach for hours at a time. The last few years have been challenging to plan because the kids like to go off on their own for a few hours. (Hawaii and cruises were great for them) What area of St. Lucia would be safe for them to walk around on their own?

If you want to be in walking distance of shops/restaurants and on the beach and where your teenagers can walk around, then your best bet is Rodney Bay area (northern SL). Try Bay Gardens Beach Resort or Royal St. Lucian (both on beach and I believe they are both 4 stars). You can walk to many different restaurants/bars/shopping and casino, etc., from those hotels. Right in main tourist area, but not overly so, and it is safe. You're also very close to the marina.

The south side is where the iconic Pitons are located, as well as all the adventure stuff, ziplining, waterfalls, etc. However, you can do a land and sea tour from the north end to the south end and see all the sites that way. However, staying in the south you are more isolated and remote so it would be difficult for your teenagers just to get out and walk around, as well as yourselves.

In the north, though, there is Pigeon Island, which is worth checking out. $5 entry fee; old military area, and nice smaller beach there where you can snorkel, hang out and hit Jambe de Bois for drinks/lunch, etc. You can also do horsebacking riding from north area, as well as snuba and segways.

So with that, my recommendation to check most of your boxes would be to stay in the north somewhere (Rodney Bay area). But definitely be sure to take a day trip or two to the south as it is beautiful. Good luck!

Hope this helps

Rodney Bay would be the area for you. Several beachfront resorts - I would strongly suggest Bay Gardens Beach Resort - you can get a 2 bedroom suite that has a full kitchen, so you can stock up on snacks, drinks, lunch and breakfast, etc. There are around 30 different restaurants and bars within a 15 minute walking radius, it is a very safe area for the kids (and adults) to walk around on their own. There are 2 shopping "malls" with lots of different stores, fast food places, ice cream parlors. There are watersports for hire right next door to BGBR for tube rides, jet skis, boat tours, hobie cats, etc. You can easily organize a rental car for touring around the island or the hotel can organize tours for you. Horsback riding and ziplining (both regular ziplines, Adrena - line and night time ziplining) are about 30 minutes away, while ATVing is closer to an hour away (it's a small island, but the mountainous roads make everywhere much further away than as the crow flies).

About an hour down the other coast is Soufriere with the Pitons, volcano, waterfalls, hiking, snorkeling, diving, etc.

Lots to do and see in St. Lucia - your kids (and yourselves) would have a great time.

Enjoy!

Thank you. Are all the activities in the South an hour or so away? I would rather give up walking distance than to have to take a taxi everyday for an hour each way to do activities. We will not be renting a car as driving on the opposite side is difficult for us (we tried in Grand Cayman)

Most of the hiking, snorkeling, Pitons, volcano, most waterfalls, ATVing, etc is in the south - either on the east or west coast. It is about an hour each way to get to any of these activities.

there is horseback riding, ziplining and ATVing (I think, if the company is still operating) in the north, but again, all about 20-30 minutes from Rodney Bay. There is also a bit of snorkeling at Pigeon Island, along with some hikes and restaurants. Don't know what else to say - it is a small island geographically, but topography-wise, it is time-consuming to get around!

You could stay in the Soufriere region, but there is little to nothing to wakl to as far as activities and dining, unless you stay right in Soufriere town proper at either the Downtown Hotel or Hummingbird resort. It is not an area I would have your 2 teens run around alone at night though. While safe, it is not well lit, few sidewalks and nothing really to do at night- lttle nightlife and little shopping. There are some local eats right in town - some very good food actually, it would be about a 10-15 minute walk from Hummingbird or right at your doorstep at Downtown (Downtown hotel is very, very basic) There are lots of other hotel options in Soufriere area, but nothing that would be within walking distance to pretty much anything - and most are a lot more expensive!

Another option may be Coconut Bay - it is a family, all-inclusive resort on the south-east coast, right near the int'l airport. It is closer to ATV, Pitons, etc - about 30-45 minutes one way. No watersports at the resort as it is on the Atlantic and no snorkeling at the resort (again, on the Atlantic!) but you would be closer to most of the major activities. You could walk into town for grocery store and a few local shops - about a 20-30 minute walk or closer to the resort are some beach bars and grills - about 15-20 minutes.

Good luck and enjoy your visit!

JJPCheers,

As divers both of these resorts are hard to beat in location for diving in St. Lucia with excellent beach dives from both to boot! Snorkeling subjective yet a nice bonus you can enjoy from the beach.

Check out both resorts for their lists of complementary water sport and other activities included in the room rates.

A bit late in the game for availability on some of the cottage rooms this summer at Jalousie, yet... you might look at their REV 2012 special, which also includes breakfast and dinner and one night free on a 7 night booking.

Yes, Anse Chastenet and Jalousie are both excellent options - they are included in the more expensive options I alluded to above in Soufriere. They are most definitely not walking distance to anything - both are fairly isolated. If you are not renting a car, taxis will add up very quickly to get to any of the attractions that are all nearby - you can zipline, hike, volcano, mud baths, mountain bike, etc. all within about 30 minutes of the resort (by car) ATVing is about 45-1 hour around the other coast. Horseback riding would either need to be arranged on a private basis with Congomon at a nearby beach or around the other side of the island again - about 45-1 hour away. Or up north - again, 1 hour+ north. Snorkeling and diving you can do right from both resorts.

They are both excellent 5-star resorts that offer lots of options for activities at the resort. They are both pricey though - much more than BGBR in Rodney Bay, Hummingbird in Soufriere, etc. And again - most definitely not walking distance to anything as far as dining, activities, etc. (although at Jalousie, if you are into hike/walking, you can hike out to the Piton Falls waterfall and mineral baths or to Martha's Table for dining- it is pretty strenous walk and would be around 20 -30 minutes there and more back as the uphilll is killer on the way back)

Good luck with your research!

My above post was not to take away from checking out Congomon also, for an array of off the beaten path...things to do, including horseback riding.

JJPCheers - Your post describes us so closely (but our kids are 11 and 15)! I am checking out Bay Gardens Beach Resort right now and would love to know where you ended up staying and what activities you did (if you happen to see this almost a year later...)
