Where should we stay?

Having a hard time deciding....should we split up our 5 nights north and south? How far is the international airport from both areas? If we stay south...should we do a meal plan or are there plenty of restaurant choices...do we need a car for either area. If we spend all our time in one area....should we just rent a car for the day to see the other part of the Island... Thanks!

1. Re: Where should we stay?

for only 5 nights, I would pick one area or the other - it is a long way between areas on the island and having to pack up after 2 or 3 nights and move hotels just takes away from time you could be enjoying what the island has to offer.

Totally depends on what you are looking for in your vacation. Do you want lots of restaurants within walking distance, long stretch of beach, possible nightclub or casino, etc. and lots of hotel choices? Or do you want more quiet with stunning scenery and natural beauty but much less dining and shopping, etc. options?

Soufriere is the most scenic area of the island, with lots of both luxury resorts and budget accomodations. It is not a real walking friendly area unless you stay right in Soufriere proper. Amazing views of Pitons, waterfalls, volcano and mud baths, botanical gardens, snorkeling off the beaches, plantation tours, ziplining, etc. No long stretches of beach for long walks, etc - more coves and the like. www.soufrierefoundation.org for more info. In this area, you would need a rental or a hire car/taxi to get around to the sights and other dining. Several resorts do offer meal plans which can work out well if you don't leave the resort. Both cheap eats and fine, 5 star dining available.

Rodney Bay/north end of the island offers a wide rang of accommodations, over 30 restaurants and bars, shopping, nightclubs and casino within a 15 or so minute easy walking radius. It is not a loud, raucous area, but there is lots more options for dining and hotels than down south. Long stretch of beach for walking with very calm waters for swimming and loads of different watrsports for hire. Ther is Pigeon Island to explore, the Castries Craft and Food market (recently rated #3 food market in the world by NatGeo) ziplining/arial tram, horseback riding, Segway tours, ATVing, etc all available around the north.

Rodney Bay is about 1.5 hours from UVF, the international airport. Soufriere is about 45-50 minutes from UVF.

If you stay in Rodney Bay, it is very easy to arrange for either tours or hire car to explore the Soufriere region - tours are pretty small groups - no huge tour buses or anything like that!

Hope that helps get you started on your research - a little more info about what you are looking for in your vacation would help us make recommendations!

We've just come back. We spent 1 night in Soufriere and 7 nights in the north at the Windjammer Landing Resort (both pre-booked). I agree with the previous posting. The south is un-developed with lots pretty scenery, interesting local culture, great diving and snorkelling. The north is quite extensively developed, although no high-rise stuff, between Castries and Gros Islet, and in particular the Rodney Bay area. There is every hotel and restaurant option you might need in the north. So depends what you like doing. Having just come back, my ideal would have been to have the Windjammer hotel located in the south! But you'd probably want a car as taxis tend to be expensive.

5 nights trip -- you should stay in one place. If you want more activity then the North is for you. If you want beauty and relaxation then the South. I would choose the South.

If we stayed in the north, which hotel.....nicest beach and good location, not too crowded....in the south would want view and snorkeling....any hotel suggestions....still thinking of extending a few days and doing 3 or 4 nights in each area.

Budget will define what is good for you. For the South I would look at Jalousie or Hummingbird (for different budgets) and for the North I would look at Cap Maison (small cove beach), Bay Gardens Beach Resort, Rendezvous and Body Holiday. Beaches in St. Lucia are not crowded like Jones Beach in New York even on a busy day.

Stay in the south! The north end is way too crowded with too much traffic and development for our tastes.

The better resorts are in the south too. Ladera, Jalousie, Jade Mt.

Nothing in the north compares at all. If you want busy traffic and such take a water taxi up and spend the day. They range from about $40-$60US for the trip on the water and it's much faster than driving the 300 switch backs on the coast road.

Besides, some of the best private villas are rented down in the Soufriere area. There are better options than doing the all inclusive resort gig.
