ferries in Caribbean

5 of us will be travelling from Martinique via St Lucia and Dominica to Guadeloupe by ferry in August. Do we need to book in advance? Our international flights are back from Guadeloupe so we can't afford to have any hitches! The ferries seem fairly irregular i.e. not every hour but every other day. Costs? Any other advice would be appreciated.

Tickets for the Express des Isles are readily available a few days in advance. No, they do not run daily, or multiple times a day/hourly. The schedule does change every 2 or 3 months, but generally it runs about 4-5 days a week from here to Martinique. For further travel, you would have to check those legs. You can purchase tix from Cox & Company here on island, from the company direct and so forth. you don't need to purchase this far in advance by any means, but do just keep an eye on the schedule to plan accordingly.

Sounds like a great trip! Enjoy!

Thanks for this great advice. I assume the ticket prices do not go up as the date gets closer.

There is a web site for the ferry company at www.express-des-iles.com which shows timetables, and enables you to buy the tickets directly from the site. I have done that in the past, without any problems. However, the English language version of the site is far from complete, so you will probably need to go into the relevant French pages to get the information and order tickets.
