Help with locations on island

We are going to St. Lucia and are not sure whether to stay in Marigot Bay for a few days and then move to ?? It all sounds good. We are a middle age couple who are not into Touristy as much as local culture but would like a nice experience including snorkeling (lots) and general sightseeing. Suggestions greatly appreciated. Also, December weather? Normally good?

How long are you planning to stay? I f more local experiences and culture, along with lots of snorkeling are your thing - then Soufriere is where you want to be. Marigot Bay has very little to no snorkeling in the bay area at all, and is compounded with boat traffic (big yacht harbor!). Lovely views, etc but beach and snorkeling - not really. Also, a bit far from the rest of the sites and experiences of the island. Maybe 2 or 3 days, them down to Soufriere - but if it's only a week's stay, Soufriere is where you want to be. Walk out snorkeling fro, pretty much all beaches in the area, Pitons, volcano, mud baths and mineral baths, hiking, local eats, local music, plantation tours, easy access to Choisel and Laborie for more unspoiled local villages, etc.

Stonefield Estate for a villa hotel experience, Hummingbird Beach Resort for beachfront, locally owned hotel, La Haut for stunning views and B&B, etc.

Enjoy your visit.

If the length of your trip is relatively short (week, 10 days, etc.) best to stay in the Soufriere area. This is where you want to be for the local snorkeling, which you can do in this area right from shore. Plenty of spots to explore--Soufriere Beach, Anse Chastanet, Malgartoute, Sugar Beach, etc. If you are based in this area you can always rent a car for a day or two or hire a driver/guide and travel up to Marigot to see the views and enjoy the area. There are plenty of lodging options to select from in the Soufriere area but take a close look at the smaller boutique hotels and B&B style options to give you more of the local connection--La Haut, Crystals, Hotel Chocolat, Ladera, Fond Doux, Stonefield. If you are interested in a small villa stay, check out the Treehouse, which is near Anse Chastanet.
