Always automatic?

I am interested in hiring a car during my February visit, but all of the cars I have seen for hire are automatics. Do they hire manual anywhere?

Have you checked with the Hertz office on the island?

They have the largest fleet.

Also you should check with some of the smaller local guys who make an extra effort to provide service.

Hertz only rents automatics. We too wanted a straight drive, but no dice. We were told a stick is very hard to find on teh island. Good luck. I am glad we had an automatic to be honest, there are a lot of hills. I'd be too many clutches get burned up too quickly, hence the no stick shifts available.

Get an auto. No need for a stick, can't drag race on SXM.

Thanks for the info.

I have had a UK licence for 25 years but never driven an automatic (what do you do with your left leg).

Guess I will have to hire one at home for the weekend to get some practice

Let the left foot rest. You can always tap it along to the island tunes.

Oh my, no need to practice. Ever driven a bumper car? Same thing. You push the gas to go, the brake to stop. Most people would be worried if they had to use the manual transmission in a new place for the first time. Don't be concerned, you'll probably laugh at how easy it is.

Yeah, maybe bumper car wasn't the best example.
