Honeymoon Help!

I am going insane trying to figure out the best place to go on my honeymoon Sept 2006! I have some time, but was hoping to book some place by the end of this year to get some kind of "early bird" deal.

Important things:

We like to drink a lot.

We need to have some kind of night life or entertainment options.

We want to feel special on our honeymoon.

We are not big on kids.

A swim-up pool bar is a must.

Looking for a beautiful romantic beach with watersport options as well. A best of both worlds idea...romantic and lazy during the day and things to do at night.

We like the idea of the all-inclusive so we won't have to worry about carrying around money, but are looking for feedback on that as well.

Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Oh, and we are looking to pay about $4000 for the whole trip, including air fare...

Thank you all in advance!

My opinion: St. Martin/St. Maarten is best when you can tour the island and visit each awsome beach, restaurant etc. Renting a car and driving to a different beach each day is super fun...Meaning I WOULD NOT get an all inclusive there. The food is unbelievable...and the beaches are the best! you would want to try them all and if you're paying for an all inclusive, you'd want to take advantage of it. St. Martin is fairly safe to travel with you husband. (I would NEVER travel, just the 2 of us in Jamaica or Dominican Republic etc.) Plenty of options for beach sports...also you can take a sunset horse back ride if you wish and I think you can book it for just you and your new hubby with the guide. You say you drink alot...all inclusive will save you money there. My husband and i have been to st. martin twice and will return again this fall. IT IS OUR FAVORITE PLACE! We took our honeymoon there 10/02 and can't wait to get back. You will have to first choose an island then search trip advisor for good hotel/resort reviews and find your swim up bar that way. Another thing...St. Martin is expensive. the Dutch side (the southern 1/2) takes US funds. The French side takes Euros. email back with specific ?'s.

Based on your description, I don't think St. Martin is the place for you. If you do decide to go there, you will want to stay on the Dutch side where the nightlife is more active. Traffic is a nightmare on the island and you don't want to drive back to the French side after a night of partying. You may be happier with one of the larger all inclusives. Jamaica has some nice ones, but I personally think it would be ashame to go there and not travel around to other parts of the island - it is a great place to explore. You may want to consider one of the Couples resorts or Grand Lido. The all inclusives on the Mayan Riviera in Mexico may be good choices too.

Couple of things to keep in mind.

1. September is height of hurricane season in the Caribbean (although chances are that the weather will be great)

2. Due to #1, prices are great and traffic is much better than high season.

3. St Maarten is not known for it's all-inclusives, since the French side, St Martin, is the gourmet capital of the caribbean.

4. If you are looking for a place just to hang at the hotel/resort and not explore the island, the this is not the place for you.

Having said all that, here's what I would do.

Stay on the Dutch side. Research some of the nice resorts or villas there. That way you will have access to nightlife, casinos and wonderful food.

The great thing about the island is you can get all you want, but may have to travel a little. We love that about the island. If you can't find it at this beach, just go to the next. There's 37 of them!

Beach on the French side. Access to watersports, beautiful remote beaches. A fine dining experience if you can afford it.

Car rental, especially during Sept, is very reasonable. About $20 a day. You can circle the island in about 1 hour.

Here's my suggestion: all of the things you are looking for are at the Sonesta Maho. While its a solid 3-4 star hotel, I wouldn't call it decadent/special for a honeymoon. Therefore, I recommend breaking up your trip between Anguilla, St. Barts and St. Martin, spend 4 days at each one.

St. Martin is great for nightlife, casinos, etc. Anguilla is just beautiful for when you want to just relax and be pampered - try Cap Jaluca or Cuisinart. and St. Barts is, well, St. Barts

As much as I love St. Martin, I think other posters are right about it not being the spot for you given your list of likes. As well, the hurricane season IS a reason to avoid the Caribbean this time of year...you just never know and after all, it's your honeymoon.

The Mayan Riviera would likely be perfect and there are lots of great deals offered for September travel.

Otherwise, how about an all inclusive at Cabo? The beaches are not always swimmable, but otherwise I think it would fit the bill for a great honeymoon.

I have to agree with the other posters that this may not be the ideal place for your honeymoon. Especially in the most active month for hurricaines. My daughter is going to ARuba next week on her honeymoon and staying at the Divi all-inclusive. If you are not interested in Aruba, Punta Cana is beautiful, all-inclusive and wonderful beaches.

Hi, I agree Sept is a gamble but you could be lucky. For honeymooners the beaches on the island are incredible. We may be too expensive but we have bought, gutted and renovated a small one bed apartment on the beach at Grand Case. We have put the best of everything in it and it has two shower rooms, ipod station, plasma, designer kitchen/dining area, lounge area and large fully opening windows with amazing views across to Anguilla. There is security and car parking and is in a small building with 6 other privately owned aparts. You can walk to good beach bar barefoot with great sunsets. It will be available from March 2006. We can provide pick-up, assist with car hire, arrange flowers and champagne if required. Maid service. Contact me if I can be of help. Hope you have a wonderful honeymoon wherever you decide to go!

Email Sonesta Maho front office manager Claire. claire@mahobeach.com St. Maarten is dead in Sept every year but she will be able to help you if you decide on the island (at least a good deal on the room).
