Pelican Resort Club in St. Maarten in August

Good afternoon. I am going to be visiting St. Maarten for the first time this August. I will be staying at the Pelican Resort Club through an RCI timeshare. We are staying in the B476 unit. Does anyone know anything about this unit? There are three of going ages 28 and 30. Are there any places that are not to miss sites - restaurants, happy hours, nigt life??!! We will probably be renting a car for a few days as well. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I have used this site to help me narrow down our hotel choice and I am hoping some frequent visitors to the island can help us make it a trip to remember.

I can't give you first hand knowledge about Pelican but the area you will be staying in will certainly offer you a plethera of restaurants to sample and there are a few boat excursions that leave from the Pelican Marina so that makes it easy to embark.

When you rent your car (which I do hope you do), we all would recommend that you take a ride around the entire island to see how different it will look with a whole different feel to it on the French side as well. That's what we really enjoy about this island. We stay on the Dutch side to take advantage of the savings and then occasionally travel to the French side when we're in the mood for a different venue of sorts.

You should maybe take the short boat ride to Pinel Island and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and beautiful surroundings or maybe Orient Beach where it's more lively and the beach much more expansive. And then take a ride into Marigot to window shop or just sit by the Marina Royale and have a nice breakfast or lunch. There really is so much to see and do that you certainly won't be bored.

Definitely read some of these recently written trip reports! They are a wealth of information that you won't find in any tour book and this is recent first-hand knowledge that will help you to decide what you want to do each day. But remember...sand gravity hits hard and once you hit the beach, all your plans will soon fade away until it's time for you to leave the island. This is a well known fact...lol

Hey Manddiedpe07 - We just got back from there on Sunday (think we were in B472?) and we had an awesome time. There's a pool directly in front of your room with a fun swim-up bar, happy hr, and other daytime activities. There's a great beach bar that has daily drink specials and karaoke night which was hilarious. There's a fun casino in the middle of the resort and the favorite nightlife spot was probably the Red Piano. As you walk down the hill towards the main road, you can stop in at the Buccaneer Bar for drinks and there are tons of restaurant and nightlife options along the main road.

I would highly recommend renting a car for a few days to explore more of the island. This was my first time there and I'd say Orient beach was my favorite spot. If you have any other questions, feel free to send via TA message. Have a great trip.

Some ideas for Happy Hours - although anywhere on the island at any hour is happy hour..

Buccaneer Beach Bar - right next door to you

Uncle Harry's - across from airport toward Maho, by the car rental agencies; don't be put off by the looks of it - drive all the way in to the dock on the water. Julio is a great host, makes a generous pour, and plays rock and roll while he sings along

Karakter's - Simpson Beach close to Mary's Boon (other side of airport from the road to Maho); jazz on Fridays

Sunset Bar & Grill - at the end of the runway as you approach Maho

While you have the car - visit several of the beaches (Orient & Pinel as already suggested, Baie Rouge, Mullet). And stop in Grand Case and walk the streets and eat at one of the lolos, or, at one of the top end restaurants the SXM is noted for. Visit the capitol cities of Marigot and Philipsburg (be prepared for traffic though). Spend an evening in Maho - eat and walk around, or go to a club or the casino if that appeals.

Do a sail trip - the Wednesday night Pub Crawl on the Celine with Captain Neil (leaves from Skipjack's), or a sunset cruise, or an all day snorkeling/island tour trip like the Golden Eagle on Friday or with Captain Neil on the Celine, or voer to Prickly Pear (off of Anguilla's coast)

Have a great trip.

Mikesmyth is correct. We are at the pelican this week in unit B362 / B261. Traffic is not bad now and it will probably be less an issue in August. I will also echo what others have said for low cost dining.

Talk of the Town or other Lolos in Grand Case are the best bargain

Buccaneer Beach Bar is a short walk and a best value for fish sandwiches, burgers and ribs

Went to Pizza Pasta in Maho last night and it was great as usual

We feel that sunset beach has gone downhill a bit, but it has a great location

It has been windy over by Karaker's so far this week, but we plan on hitting that as well.

FYI - We went to Karakter on Friday night last week and it was a blast. It's a great laid back night with live Jazz and a bucket of Amstel Brights for $12. We also got the 4 appetizer plate and they were all great. Probably liked the chicken with peanut sauce the best. Funky beanbag loungers and beautiful beachside fun.

Highly recommended.

Why worry? Anything short of a hurricane you're going - right?

August is usually very hot (90++) by day (70++) by night with one bright sunny and humid day afer another with some scattered showers lasting under 30 minutes, many of these showers during the late evenings.

We've had very little rain. It's been hot - around 90 late afternoon. Most days a nice breeze.
