bringing in food

Last year when I came to SXM I noticed it was a breeze getting thru the airport after arriving. I was thinking of bringing some food with me in my suitcase this time--just wondering if it will be ok

The only problem you would have is if the food were not properly stored in your suitcase for an extended period of time. Otherwise, you should have no problem whatsoever. The only people you come in contact with are immigration (the same as years ago).

Prices and selection in SXM are such that I don't see the need to bring it with you. But if you must that you have no problems bringing it in.

actually sxmluver, there is customs now in SXM. They spot check and are more looking for drugs than for food.

but they are there..sometimes..

I am not sure why the OP wants to bring food either. You can get everything here.

Only bring food if you have an absolutely favorite brand of something.that you think you cannot find here.

and now I think the airlines are all going to start charging for a second checked bag, so consider that too.

Thanks Barbara for this info, not that I would have any problems but always good to know.

And I also agree about the food thing but I guess some people feel that they would prefer not to be harried on their vacation if they just froze it and brought it along with them. I do know that I have been tempted to as well but because I know I will be there for a few weeks, I decide against it as I have plenty of time to grocery shop and search for the better meats.

We were there in July and took various snack foods with us. We packed 3 12 packs of sodas, pringle potato chips, granola bars, crackers, microwave popcorn and things like that. We had no difficulties getting through customs. We went to Nassau for a week in June and packed a small cooler with bacon and ham and an ice pack. No problems there either.

Have fun, I'm a teacher and am back at school. I am jealous!

Especially the soda. Lots of weight in those sodas and not much saving bringing it from home.
