Trip Report - October 31-November 7 First Timer

My husband and I travled toSXM recently and had a blast! We stayed at Oyster Bay Beach Resort . After reading all the negative reviews I was really nervous. We had none of the problems I read about. The staff was friendly, no bugs, absolutley nothing to complain about. We had a studio on the marina. The room was old and outdated but did the job. How much time do you really spend in your room anyways???

Our first day there we picked up the car @ Unity Car Rental. Very friendly no problems at all. I strongly suggest that if you are going to SXM rent a car. Although driving there is not for the timid, a car is a must. The great thing is the island is so small it is almost impossible to get lost. Once we were settled we headed to the Fresh Market to stock our fridge with the necessities. We spent the rest of the night hanging around OBBR. We had dinner at Beau Beau's very friendly staff and good food.

Our second day was great. Prior to our arrival we scheduled a tour with Joyce Prince Joyce is a local tour guide who will create a tour specificly to what you want to do. Since we were staying for a week we wanted somthing a bit different and Joyce delivered. She took us all over. All the while giving us a little history as well as the current events. She helped us with making reservations for the 2 things we knew we wanted to do while there. I can not say enough nice things about Joyce. Well worth the $ spent. After an afternoon with Joyce you truley feel like you have a friend in SXM. Check out her website princepersonal.com She doesn't just do tours, anything you need or want in SXM Joyce can probally make it happen. After our afternoon with Joyce we felt totally comfortable with island and we were off and running.

We ate breakfast for the most part in our room. Stopped at a bakery and got some pastries and stuff for breakfast. We ate local a lot. We found a lot of spanish food. Ate a lot of BBQ too. We did eat at Pinapple Pete's for lunch one day. Great food good service. We also had lunch once at Infinity (Onsite restaurant @ OBBR).

We spent a day in Philipsburg. Did some shopping on Front & Back street. We stopped to see Nick "The Yoda guy". My husband is a Star Wars freak so he got a kick out of it.

We spent a day at Orient Beach and had a awsome time. Yep took the plunge and lost all the clothes! Gotta say it was quite liberating. Something I think everyone should do at least once in their life.

After way to much fun in the sun at Orient Beach we layed low by the pool @ OBBR one day. There pool is pretty nice and not really crowded. Then finally mustered up enough energy to go out to eat.

We went horseback riding. I think the place was called Bayside Riding Club not sure. Anyhow my husband loved it, me I didn't think it was worth the $. Our guide was very nice. We rode through a nature reserve, Got to take the horses in the water. What shocked me was for a nature reserve there sure was a lot of garbage. Plastic bottles everywhere. It was sad, St Martin is a beautiful place but greatly in need of a recycling program!

By far my favorite beach was Mullet Bay. We had a great time. It is beautiful. I wish I hadn't waited until near the end of my trip to go there because I would have spent more time there.

Went to Loterie Farm and checked out the zip lines. This was great. I had a blast. We got there early in the morning and didn't have to wait long at all.

We really roamed alot. We hit a few other beaches. A couple casinos, shopping, checked out the night life, drank alot, ate a lot. All in all we really had a great trip, everything I want out of a vacation. The people of SXM are friendly and it is an easy island to navigate. I am sure I wil be back one day.

What a nice and uplifting trip report! Thank you for sharing the highlights of your trip. This is a great recommendation for first timers to hire Joyce Prince for touring. I usually recommend her for cruisers but this was a fantastic suggestion for those who are a little leery of traveling by car when they frist arrive on their first time on the island. When we first stayed for a week, our friends who invited us to stay with them were our Joyce Prince and it made traveling around the island so much easier!

I also agree with Mullet Beach being a hidden gem. Many people underestimate the beauty of this beach. It may be within a run down area (hopefully that will change soon) but once you are on that beach, every pre-judgement just melts away. That beach is one reason why we chose where we eventually bought our home.

Thanks again and hope you can make it back again.
