day trip to anguilla? or vice versa?

Hello experts!!! My husband and I are considering a trip to anguila or st maarten. We love snorkeling and great beaches. So the question is: do you stay in st maarten and take day trips to anguilla, or the other way around? The Anguilla itinerary ends up being considerably more expensive - but would a stay there be worth it for better beaches/snorkeling? St maarten seems a bit more " touristy", from what we've read , but that can be a good thing (more choices for shopping, restaurants, etc)- can anyone who stays at either regularly advise? Thanks in advance!

I personally would stay in Anguilla and do a day trip to SXM. The beaches in Anguilla are very quiet and fantastic beaches. Great restaurants on the island too. Easy to get around and very friendly people.

There is certainly much more nite life in SXM....if you are looking for late nights....then SXM has more for you.

Its true that Anguilla is more expensive than SXM......but in my opinion, its well worth it!

it really depends what your priorities are.

Anguilla is a more get away from it all destination while St. Maarten is busier with more night life, more activities, more restaurants.

St. Maarten is a prettier island with hills while Anguilla is flat and dry, but the beaches on Anguilla cannot be beat.

St. Maarten has many more wonderful restaurants but it also has more traffic too.

you didn't say how long you are staying. Would a few days on each island work for you?

Thank you both for your replies!! We are trying to put together a 6 or 7 night stay..... we havent had much luck getting a combination package booked tho... it makes more sense to fly into st maaarten from what we've seen; not opposed to say, 3 nights in each place? Just cant do that thru expedia, etc.(island hop to anguilla, hotel only for 3 nts, then fly home of ouf St M)... any thoughts? It sounds like you can probably get to the best beaches/snorkeling from either island via day trip/excursion....too many good choices!!

You pretty much have to fly into SXM vs. Anguilla. American is the only airline that serves Anguilla from the US and that is via Puerto Rico.

Its pretty easy to get to Anguilla from SXM (either public ferry from the French side or private shuttle such as Shauna or Link from the airport) and back. Splitting your time might be a good choice......not sure where you are flying in from but your flight times can dictate which island you start/end the trip.

For AXA, I think your best bet for booking accomodations is to contact the place directly. You sometimes can get a bit of a deal and I personally would feel more comfortable having booked direct with the property since most of them are very small properties without sophisticated reservation systems.

Forgot to say.....if your flight schedule permits.....I would start the vacation in SXM and end in AXA. Couple reasons.....first, if your flight is late arriving, you won't have to worry about missing the last ferry to AXA. Second, AXA is more laid back and relaxing than SXM so a great way to end a vacation. If your return flight from SXM to the US is an afternoon flight it works great for AXA as you can spend the morning on the beach, grab lunch and then take a ferry to the airport for your afternoon flight back to the US......if you have an early morning return from SXM.......you might consider coming back to SXM for the last night and staying near the airport.

I agree with Samstevens. Start your journey in St. Martin and end in Anguilla. You won't ever want to leave once you've been there. Take advantage of the night life in St. Martin and then head over to the best beaches and restaurants in the Caribbean. You see, my husband and I like to have a good time, but we aren't into the heavy, loud bar/Casino scenes. We find Anguilla perfect because we can go to some of the best beaches in the world during the day followed by the best restaurants and have drinks either at the restaurant or back at our hotel bar which is always hoping. It's perfect for us and more than enough nightlife. We are never in a hurry to leave the restaurants at night, so usually stay as long as we please, and some of the places we like have bars you can sit at. It's perfect.
