Proper attire on the French side

On the French side, what is acceptable dress for shopping and sight-seeing (i.e., not on the beach) during the day? We definitely "dressed up" when we were in Paris this summer; but don't know if that is expected here.

no, it is not expected. both sides of the island are very casual. no sports coats and/or ties necessary for men and a simple dress or pants for women is perfectly acceptable.

many people even wear dress shorts to dinner.

When we went it was very laid back. I wore khaki shorts and a cotton fishing shirt and was almost overdressed. The waiter at LaCalifornia was wearing jeans and a tee shirt. Food was good and the atmosphere was totally relaxed.
