Opinions please! April honeymoon :)

Hello all!

Would love your help/opinions about St. Martin/St. Maarten. We want to go there for our honeymoon this April.

Questions:

(1) Any good hotels on Dutch side? St. Maarten doesn't seem to have as good reviews as French (like Le Petite and L'esplanade). Not as many hotel reviews to choose from on TA. Any other suggestions?

(2) Better to stay on Dutch and go to French for dinner and come back for nightlife? Or better to stay in Grand case and return late at night after having fun on the Dutch side?

Any opinions - esp those who went recently or frequently would be greatly appreciated!

Maybe an hotel like Mary's Boon Plantation right on simpson bay (Dutch Side) would be romantic for an Honeymoon... Or you also could stay in the heart of Philipsburg at the Passagrahan Inn. The dutch side is more "Americanised" than the French side, so it all depends if you want something different and unique. Le Petit Hotel or L'espalnade are more some kind of "Boutique Hotel".

On the French side, Esmeralda is right on Orient beach and also nicely located because close to all the good dining spots and close to the beach activities

It would depend on what you are willing to pay. There are a few really nice places to stay near the Dutch side like La Samanna but you would be paying quite a lot more for the luxury. Mary's Boon on Simpson Bay Beach, as mentioned above, is a very lovely place to stay, especially in the cabana type of homes they offer. I walked through one once and found them to be quite extraordinary. Simpson Bay Beach is a very beautiful and semi-undiscovered beach on the Dutch side which offers you lots of privacy and plenty of room to walk. It's along the airport strip but once you were at the resort, it would not phase you in the least.

There are lots of beautiful new condos as well like The Cliff in Cupecoy but keep in mind that with condo's, you would not have the swim up bars nor restaurants right on premises.

And regarding nightlife, if you want to drink, then I would advise you stay on the Dutch side because the roads at night on the French side are very dark and winding. Combine the 2 and you are headed for issues. If you do stay on the French side though, then try to find a place close enough to the Dutch side so that you don't have to drive that far..

Thank you for your help!

We definitely want a bit of both worlds - we plan on driving around to explore.

The suggestions were great. We are definitely lookin on spending a bit more $, and to experience something more luxurious w/ great service. (We normally stay at the affordable places and explore ourselves, but for a honeymoon, we want it to be a vacation of a lifetime.)

I like the idea of the cabanas at Boons, but we want a little fancier of a room/amenities. Although - the beach may make up for it :)

I've heard that the Radisson is a bit remote - does anyone know how far it is to town or to the good restaurants?

i would recommend the french side for a honeymoon. not only do you have better choices for a more upscale accomodation but the french side is more romantic and not as congested and commercialized as the dutch side.

the radisson is remote. have you looked at the westin on dawn beach if it's a full scale 4 star resort that you are looking for? rooms/suites are very nice, full amenities and the location is right on the dutch/french border at dawn beach/oyster pond. the exterior is not very caribbean but you're not looking at the outside. you have a view of st barts in the distance from the beach. there are also a few very good restaurants right in the area. it's very easy to get to grand case for excellent french restaurants and the dutch side for nightlife. we did not stay at the westin but on the other end of dawn beach. we loved the area. there are also a lot of villas, condos and townhouses for rent all over the island for a unique and romantic honeymoon experience.

You might even consider renting a villa.
