St. Maarten and St. Barts

We will be spending 5 days for my birthday at the Westin Dawn Beach at the end of January. Would love some advice for a romantic restaurant for dinner in St. Maarten. Maybe something off the beaten path. Will also take a day trip to St. Barts. and need best place to go for beach and for lunch. Thanks

big fish is a must whether or not it's for your b'day dinner. it's on the opposite side of dawn beach from the westin but not directly on the beach. excellent food and ambience. also highly recommend the french restaurants in grand case (known as the gourmet capital of the caribbean) and there's quite a few to choose from. what type of food are you looking for? that would help narrow the selections. sxm has a plethora of excellent restaurants to choose from!

We are foodies but when on vacation like romantic atmosphere with really good food. Doesn't have to be ultra fancy. Also concerned about driving back from Grand Case after a few wines....

One of our favorite Grand Case restaurants Brasserie des Îles (aka Le Pub) is about the safest place to eat on the whole island. Why? Well, it's where all the off-duty gendarmes stationed in Grand Case hang out. Good food - good prices -not fancy but driving may be an issue as police do set up check-points.

MaryJo's suggestion of Big Fish is just a very short drive from the hotel. Thios may be the better option if you're planning on more than one glass of wine.

I would also recommend staying around the Dawn Beach area. There are many road blocks on the French side checking DUI's. Two glasses of wine could put you over the limit on the French side. Yes, 2 glasses! and a big fine. You could go but take a cab to be safe if you really want to dine there.
