Paying with Euro or Usd

Hi! Wondering about paying on the island. I have a few specific questions but will gladly accept any advice or suggestions:

1) If we take a taxi from SXM airport to our hotel on the French side do we pay the driver in USD or euro?

2) Do taxis on the French side switch over to euros, e.g. if the rate sheet says $20 for x to y on the French side (like Anse Marcel to Grand Case) is the French side taxi driver going to expect 20euros or 20USD or the equivalent of 20USD in euros?

3) Do the restaurants on the French side include service in the food prices on the menu?

TIA!

1) Taxi fares are in USD only - here is the rate sheet

--------------------------------

2) No, USD island wide - see rate sheet

3) Tipping can be a bit tricky to tourists. That's because there is nothing called "tipping" in France. It is called "service". And service is included usually in your hotel rate and in your restaurant prices.

In regards to restaurants, if the service is included the menu will have clearly written on it "Service compris" meaning that service is included and it's usually 15% of the tab. But local custom is that if you are very satisfied with your waiter's service then you may leave a few spare change in addition.

The tricky part is when a patron asks the waiter if the tip is included in the total and the waiter will say "no". That's because it's true, there is no tip so he will say "no". Then upon hearing that the patron will leave a tip of 15%.

Recall that the service of 15% is included already in the total so the service plus additional tip will have come up to 30%!

So don't ask if the "tip" is included-ask instead if "service" is included. If yes, then no need to leave anything unless you are very happy and satisified with your server; in that case leave some loose change or so in addition.

NOTE: Some French side restaurants offer 1:1 exchange for payment in dollars - it is a good idea to have dollars - but since you are from France exchanging your Euro for dollars is going to cost you so you may wish to limit the amount of dollars you carry for use in some restaurants offering the par exchange and on the Dutch side where the exchange is pegged to the dollar.

-------------------------

Grand Case restaurants post the exchange outside during the daytime when you can sign the reservtions sheets.

Hi Bobcat2348- Thank you so much for the answers. One more question, do the ATM's give you an option to get back either dollars or euros?

I'm trying to remember - I believe Euros on the French side only and USD on the Dutch side - be sure to press the correct buttons.

USD or NAf on the Dutch side - that's the reason to be sure to press the correct buttons, lol

I have some Aruba florins (paper & coin) but I cannot ever recall even seeing the Dutch Sint Maarten currency and that's in 20 years of visits. Since the two currencies (USD & NAf) are pegged the USD is all that is really needed on the Dutch side. It's the only currecy used in the casinos as well.

One more quick question, to grab a taxi at the airport is there a clear sort of taxi line up or stand? Is there a specific "brand" of taxi we should look for? Is there any problem with fake taxis trying to give people rides and/or is it obvious who are the legit taxi drivers who will follow the rate sheet?

Oh last one, when dining out say in Grand Case what's the best way to get a taxi back to our hotel, ask the restaurant to call one or are there taxis on the street that we can just flag down?

TIA!

1) As soon as you exit the arrivals building you will see the taxi stand - rates should be posted as well. Dont't forget to pick up the free publications before leaving the arrivals building.

2) Good idea to ask the restaurant to call you a taxi if you don't notice a taxi stand on the blvd when you arrive.
