I've been reading and reading the posts on here (thanks for all the great info!). Sorry to bother you with ANOTHER post on where to stay, but here it goes! Wife and I are booking a trip to St. Martin in July. We are definitely interested in checking out Orient Beach and she likes to go topless and thongs on the beach. In our early 40's and not really the party all night at the club types. But on the flip side, this is a vaca so we would like to go out for some drinks every other night or so (5 night stay) So I was thinking that staying in Orient was the way to go? I was also turned off a bit by some comments about the Dutch side ("If you want partying and casino's go to Vegas") Vegas craziness is definitely not what we are looking for! However I also don't want to deal with driving home after a night out in Phillipsburg or Simpsons Bay. Is the Vegas craziness limited to Phillipsburg? Maybe some more mellow places on the Dutch side that still have a couple clubs? Or places on the French side that aren't too far of a drive home at night? Also hotel recommendations would be much appreciated! Nice pool, beach access. Not looking for top, top of the line, but willing to pay for something on the nicer side.

Thanks! and I really mean it that your comments so far on the forum are the best out there.!

Orient offers some evening dining options and may be exactly what you are looking for.

Bobcat, thanks. Yes, I think I'm leaning back that way (Orient) -- maybe we motivate for one night out in Simpson / Maho. How bad is the night time drive back?

(BTW, didn't notice the profile settings, but we're NY also!)

I have always liked Orient because their is a lot of daytime beach activity and things quiet down at night but you still have bars/restaurants open for dinner.

There are quite a few restaurants and bars in Orient Village. Safari Grill (French), Ti Chi (Asian), Le Piment (pizza, casual dining), Cote Plage (French),Little Itale (pasta) Across the street is Paris Texas, a Tex/Mex place w/bar, and Tap 5 for pizza and other light meals. Le Cadre serves mostly tapas. Additionally right outside Orient complex on the main road is Rancho Del Sol for dinner and drinks.

In the Orient complex is also Cafe Plantation, and L'Astroble at the Esmeralda resort. They are both very good and more upscale.

Several beach bars have parties at night during high season - Waikiki, Budha Bar at Bikini, Kontiki and Boo Boo Jams, Aloha for lunch. Pedros for BBQ and more..

.There is an ATM located at the gas station in Grand Case on the main road down the hill from the police station as you are coming into town from Marigot and there is also one on the main road to Anse Marcel. Restaurants like tips to be paid in cash even when a credit card is used. It is a good idea to have some USD or Euro handy.

Some nice hotels steps off the beach are:

L'Hoste

Alamanda

Caraibes Beach Hotel (now Le Grand Bleu)

Caribbean Princess

We've stayed at L'Hoste in the past. Good location but some of our friends who stay there a lot are getting a bit negative on it. Havn't stayed at Alamanda but have been inside a friends unit. Nice place too and close to both the beach and Orient village. Have also visited Esmeralda, having your own semi-private pool is nice, but generally more expensive and longer walk to beach central. If you are renting a car and have enough time there are other great beaches: Friars, from Friars walk into less frequented Happy Bay, and Baie Rouge. Get it off your bucket list by spending a day at the Club O beach.

Travel safely and enjoy.
