Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

Hello. Can anyone tell me what is open and what is closed on Xmas eve and Xmas day(restaurants, grocery stores etc.) Will be arriving on Dec23-31. Also we booked a compact car from Kenny's for 8 day's for $380.00. Is that a reasonable price? Thank You.

St. Martin is a big island with hundreds upon hundred of restaurants and shops. To give you a definitive list of what will be open or closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas would not be productive. Suffice to say, just like "back home" most grocery stores, restaurants and shops will be open during the day on Christmas Eve. Many grocery shops and stores will begin closing early to late afternoon. Plenty of restaurants, especially those that cater to the tourist crowd will be open for dinner. Christmas Day most of the grocery shops and stores will probably be closed (those stores that cater to the cruise ship crowds will probably be open albeit for shortened hours). Again, you'll find many restaurants will be open for both lunch and dinner.

I suggest you do your "shopping" on the afternoon/evening of the 23rd or on the morning of the 24th when just about everything will be open, in that way you won't have to worry about what's open or closed Christmas Day. And don't worry about restaurants, there will bee plenty of places to dine on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day - you won't go hungry.

On the Dutch side, generally speaking, everything is open on Christmas eve, although some supermarkets close early in the afternoon. On Christmas day all grocery stores have to close but bakeries are permitted to open. Some bars & restaurants are open on Christmas Day, it's up to the individual place. In the last few years in the Simpson Bay area Buccaneer Beach Bar has been closed, La Bamba open at lunchtime for drinks & have held an open house pot luck for food. Lee's & Topper's were open in the evening, at least. We usually go to the St Maarten Yacht Club which is open all day & where there's normally a good crowd.
