St. Maarten/Martin & St. Barths

Planning a 20th anniversary trek to St. Maarten/Martin and St. Barths with my wife for late Jan/early Feb 2015. Primary destination will be SBH but, because we'll be traveling through SXM to get to SBH, I thought it made sense to spend time on both islands. If you had 10 days to spend on SXM and SBH, how would you allocate your time?? Just thought I'd get some opinions from those "in the know."

For context, we're early 40s, not big on late-night partying, enjoy outdoors in general (sand/water/hiking), and looking to enjoy downtime away from 16/14/12 year old kids.

Thanks in advance!

Scott

If you have only 10 days, I would stay 3 days in St. Martin and a week in St. Barths.

As above, a week in Saint Barths is much better

There is more to do in St Maarten, it is much more commercialised and certainly the Dutch side looks to cater for visitors from the US.

St Barths is more relaxed, restful and not very American ( and dare I say it much more safer than some parts of St Maarten ). It can be a lot more expensive, but if you know where to go, it can be as cheap or less than St Maarten.

Personally I would spend more time on St Barths but St Maarten certainly is worth seeing too. The split of time really depends on your preferences.

You should consider flying to St Barths on SBC from Grand Case rather than SXM. Small airport, much less hassle and usually cheaper as the airport taxes are much lower.

I agree with the other posts. Split your time between the two islands, they both have much to offer. If in SXM for any length of time, consider a day trip to Anguilla.

Given the choice, I would also spend more time on Anguilla than St Maarten !

If I were asked to recommend a day trip from SXM I would say Saba, that is a place that can be seen in a day ( if you survive the landing ! )
