Confused - Philipsburg - St. Maarten

According to our cruise itinerary we shall be visiting Philipsburg and in brackets written St Maarten - is this a different area of Phillipsburg or what.

I always investigate regions before we travel and I understand that there's the Dutch side and the French side, but as I am looking for things to do during our visit, where should I be searching Phillipsburg or St Maarten (I thought it was the same) - apologises for my ignorance.

Philipsburg is the capital of Dutch Sint Maarten - Marigot is the capital of French St. Martin. Your ship docks in Philipsburg.

Check this link for island wide activities.

Thanx for the link - the question is will we have time to have a visit to both sides and will we be able to easily get from one side to the other without renting a car.

We aren't so interested in sitting on a beach all day and with the limited time that we have. What are the most interesting places to visit (i.e. museums or forts) that would be worthy of a NOT TO MISS on either side, and worth buying articles.

We are a middle aged couple that are interested in art & culture rather than just sunning on the beach and although we'd not be disappointed for a quick dip if the beaches are unforgettable and worth seeing.

Without a car you are in for a very long travel day - buses (mini-vans) run without a schedule, make many stops and don't got to all places - they will get you to the main areas but it will take time.

I suggest a visit to Marigot and Philipsburg for shopping.

The link above lists art galleries and other places of interest - museums, old forts, etc.

Is it possible then to just walk to beach from the pier?

Great bay beach looks to be right there.

This webcam will give you a view of the cruise ships, the water taxis that shuttle passengers back and forth (or you can walk), and a glimpse of the beach right in the town center in Philipsburg:
