Just wondering about the currency that is used on the island and if we should exchange any money before we leave Canada?

Dutch side:

USD = 1.78 NAf

Some places exchange at 1.80, others at 1.75, the currencies are pegged - this is the normal exchange rate.

French side:

Euro / dollar rates change daily - some restaurants will exchange at 1:1, also some gas stations offer 1:1. - most follow the day to day rates +/-

Hi Saskgirl,

Take USDs and Euros. The only thing priced in Naf's were gas and groceries and they will take either USDs or Euros. There are RBC and Scotiabank branches on the Dutch side and several French banks with ATMs on the French side.

You might want to exchange Canadian currency before your trip.

Everywhere we went took the USD, we did not have to change to the Euro the whole trip. Most stores have a calculator to change the price to USD, or give you 1:1.

Depends on what side of the island you are on.

French side dispenses euro. Someone said one of the ATM's there will also dispense US$, but I don't know it. Dutch side dispenses Naf or US$. Be sure to press the right button. Do not select Local Currency.

Not ALL gas stations on the French side give 1:1. And 1:1 doesn't mean much right now if you look at the exchange rate.
