Simply Market

This is a great grocery store in Marigot. I think it was called something else before but it is now called Simply Market. It is like an American grocery store where all of the locals shop. It is right before the bridge to Nettle Bay. We had a kitchen where we stayed and bought everything there and made dinner. The baguettes were very good we got there, and all of the prices were pretty low.

Simply Market is very nice, but there is absolutely nothing American about it. It's a VERY French shop and prices are on the high side. They do have wonderful French cheeses and deli meats.

Simply used to be US Market. Changed in 2012. The have two locations, Hope Estate and Nettle Bay / Marigot. They are part of the French Auchan chain. Better value and selection of American products can be found at Grand Marche on Union Road and other locations. Avoid the location at Porto Cupecoy. The prices are much higher. Fresh Market outside of Phillipsburg has the best produce on the island.

The prices are all Grand Marche stores are the same. Different selections in each of the stores, but a half gallon of milk is the same at all branches, including the Gourmet Marche's. One computer system, one price.

We hit the Simply across from grand case airport and it was mostly french, we even saw people who run a restaurant and convenience store we have shopped in there. Its just as good as le grand marche. The only thing i can say is that the grand marche in cole bay had the kriek beer that we like. Simply did not, but then neither did the grand marche in pburg or either gourmet marche. Must be a specialty item.

As I said, different GM stores have different selections. Lots more French items in GM on Union Road due to it's being on the border closest to the French side. Porto Cupecoy has lots of snack items as they bus the students from the Medical school there and high end items because of the higher end condo's and villas in the area.. Supply and demand!

For anyone staying in a villa or condo with kitchen anywhere near the french side, on our last night we hit Leader Price which is just passed Orient Village. It's kind of like a mini Costco and has deals on chocolate and frozen fish as compared to the Simply, Grand Marche and Gourmet Marches.

Will I be able to buy wine somewhere? Also, how high are the grocery prices, just ballpark?

You can get wine anywhere, and the prices are on par,or cheaper than in the US for wine and alcohol, especially French wine, and Dutch beer and liquors. Groceries will be a little more expensive, though not as bad as NYC convenient stores.

We found that the French gourmet item and the wines were cheaper at Simply and Super U on the French side. Most American items were more expensive. As an example $6 for a loaf of bread.

Don't even think of buying Doritos, chips, or American snack chips...wow very expensive. We snack on baguettes, French cheeses, pates, and deli meats from Simply Market.
