Staying in San Juan before BVI sailing trip

In 2012 we are returning to sail the BVI. This will be our 2nd trip and I was wondering if anyone has spent time in San Juan before flying over to EIS/Tortola? Did you find it best to visit OLD San Juan before sailing or after? Is SJ really worth seeing? Or a disappointment? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

we love OSJ, there are many places to stay which are noted on Frommers.ca, the old city is worth a leisurely day to explore and you can do the whole thing on foot, I believe frommers has a self tour you can print, there are many great restaurants and on one trip, we ordered drinks and an appetizer then moved onto a different restaurant to do the same, we were able to visit several unique restaurants that way and enjoy a variety of food styles, there is a city beach which is nice but you'd need to take the bus or a cab to get to it, you can also look into the harbour cruise or the ferry to one of the spanish virgin islands, lots to do, never enough time

Definitely visit Old San Juan. It's old, beautiful and funky at the same time. There is a free trolley which takes tourists through the old town and to old forts. They are a Unesco World Heritage Site. Great site to visit with stunning views.Good page with info discoveringpuertorico.com/2010/…

Info on trolley here puertoricodaytrips.com/free-trolley-old-san-…

The old town has several unique hotels you can stay in, like Da House, Cervantes, El Convento and plethora of little guesthouses. You can opt for staying in one of chain hotels in nearby Condado area as well.

For dinner, walk Calle Fortaleza or Calle San Francisco or poke into smaller streets in between - it's full of unique restaurants, possibly you will stumble upon party on the street. It's really woth your time, I hope you will like it.

For years we have stayed at El Convento in OSJ on the way back from our sailing trips for 2-3 days. It makes the return much easier! Don't know where you are flying from. But for us it's; taxi to airport, SJU to CLT, CLT to CRW.

No extra flight from the BVI. We've also cleared back into US. A hotel room with some amenities is nice after 10 days of bareboating.

You will have fun either way.
