where to stay

Looking for inexpensive or moderate priced hotel in Tortola. Any suggestions? It would need to be walking distance to beach and would love to be able to walk to resturants.

We like to stay in Cane Garden Bay and usually stay at Myetts or Mongoose, but there are a number of places there. There are a number of restaurants and a grocery store and of course the beach. You should rent a car at least for a day to see the island. For less expensive, look at Rhymers and Elm.

We just returned from our first visit to Tortola and cannot recommend the Mongoose Apartments enough. We loved our stay there and cannot wait to go back. Sandra, the owner, is an absolutely wonderful host. Only a 2 minute walk from Cane Garden Bay and at least 6 restaurants and bars located on the beach. A perfect location and relatively affordable at $180 a night. I would second renting a car at some point to explore the rest of the island as taxis are rather expensive and add up quickly.

The ferry from St Thomas and St John say it stops at west end and then Roadtown? what stop would I get off and how far is it from there?

You can get off at either, as it is pretty much the same distance to CGB from either. My personal preference is West End, as the Customs and Immigration process tends to be a lot easier and less crowded in West End. Nice ride along the North Shore to CGB.

Yes, the taxi drivers know when the ferries come in and there will be plenty waiting right outside of customs to take you to Cane Garden Bay. It is about $30 from West End to CGB and $24 from Roadtown to CGB. We arrived and left from West End and agree with the previous poster for why West End would be a better choice.

I would ferry to WE too, do rent a Jeep from Del in CGB if you don't rent from Jerry in WE, you should head to Long Bay and Smuggler's Cove, or Brewer's Bay in the other direction. Do enjoy Quito on Thurs and Rubin Chinnery at the Bananakeet on Fri. Great sunsets at Bananakeet and Sebastian's, both excellent for dinner.
