Tortola Island Tours

Hello:

We read on a taxi schedule for Tortola that island tours are available, staring at $55 for one hour for 1-2 people, including one stop. No other info was given -nothing about where the stop might be or what it might include and nothing about where any of the tours (1/2/3/4/5 hours each) would take any riders.

Our question -who has taken these island tours, where did you go, what did you see, how much did you pay for it and was it worth it?

Someone else suggested in this forum that another traveler consider renting a car for $48 for the day and drive themselves. Sounds good, in general, but we read in a blog that the driving on the island is daunting with uber-steep, absurdly curvy, switchback curves where everyone drives down the middle of the roadways until the last minute then jerks to the side they are supposed to be driving on - hmmm . . . Is speed driving the norm? Any advise on what's it's like to drive a rental car there and find your own way around the island for sightseeing?

TIA for all touring/driving ideas!

Where are you staying and for how long? You may well want a car to provision your boat or villa, as the best grocery store and liquor stores are in Road Town. Some roads are worse than others. There is one on the west end that is very steep with sharp switchbacks; the coast road is not too bad. Of course you will be driving on the left-hand side.

We generally figure about $90-100/day for a car, usually 4x4, including total insurance. If you plan to rely on your credit card coverage, check the small print carefully, you will be outside the US. Also check with the rental car company how much they will expect you to pay in the event you get in an accident.

A one-hour taxi ride isn't going to get you very far - barely from RT to WE and back, without even time for a drink or photos. I would allow a day to see WE, Smugglers, CGB, Brewers, Long Bay EE, Trellis, and the ridge road, including lunch somewhere. You can provision on the way home; just remember to bring a cooler with ice blocks for frozen food.

Thanks, Geneva: We are just there for one day to see a BVI, staying overnight and eating at a restaurant in Road Town. Wondered if we'd see much of the island at all just taxing from WE to RT and were considering an island tour that would take us around a bit and end up dropping us off in RT.

Haven't been to Tortola yet, but if it's similar to other islands I'd definitely say take a tour and relax as much as you can! Roads can be hilly, windy, some drive on the opposite side of the road not worth the headache IMO!
