Help Us Decide....BVI Or......?

We are planning a Caribbean vacation in early May '07 with our friends. We will not be taking any children. Not familiar w/ British Virgin Islands. Have been to US VI. Which island for us? We like to gamble a little and laid back hotel. We are not into partying just like to have a couple drinks and relax. We also like to go on an excursion to see the whole island. Can't decide. So many choices! We love crystal clear blue water. For us the quality of the beach/water is the whole vacation. Also want an island with a "Caribbean" feel. With that in mind I don't even know which hotels to begin looking into. ALso are there any all-inclusives in BVI?

We are going to choose between Barbados, Domincan Republic, or BVI. If anyone has been to all 3 and can compare that would be fantastic.

Also, any good restaurant recomendations?

Which hotel would you consider the nicest. We recently stayed @ Riu property and really loved it.

Again, all help is appreciated! Can't wait for vacation!

VacationRelax,

I would not have felt comfortable leaving the resort and going out exploring on my own either but then it's not recommended to go off alone in Jamaica either. I felt completely safe of the beach but didn't want to wander off into town. What I liked about Punta Cana is how beautiful the beaches are and how friendly the people that worked at the resort were. We didn't really have trouble with reservations in the restaurants (we went in May) but I did get food poisoning at their Chinese restaurant. I thought the grounds at the Melia Caribe Tropicale were beautifully landscaped and I would stay there again if I went back but I wouldn't eat meat. I am a travel agent so I talked with a lot of people at the airport while I was waiting for my flight. No matter where people stayed, everyone complained about the food but I think it's just not what we are used to flavor-wise.

I don't like to go to Jamaica either because you can't leave the resort. If the food is as bad everywhere else, that is validation of my intent not to return. The food in Tortola is great. And I think beaches are at least equal in quality.

Imagine me giving an opinion!

I thought the food in DR was awful. Worse from anywhere in the world. Also got a "bug" that took about a week to shake off. I thought Altos De Chavon was gorgeous. I thought the beaches were pretty, and especially the palmtrees (I looove palmtrees) But the water does not compare to Virgin Islands nor T&C or Anguilla. Lots of seaweed, and not real clear water. It is turqouise, but it doesn't have all those turqouise differences as other islands. I stayed at Sunscape in Punta Cana, but got a water taxi to explore Barvero, and day trips by taxi to La Romana and AltosDe Chavon. I am fluent in spanish, which helps when you leave the resorts. If I didn't know spanish, I would not venture out.

Barbados is a nice weel rounded island, but it's BIG. The water is turqouise, but the beaches are smaller. Don't expect the water and beaches to look like T&C. There are many vendors around all the beaches. Expect to be pestered. The resorts are gorgeous. I stayed at Bougainvilla, and really liked the resort. I didn't like Bridgetown at all. I loved Bottom Bay and Crane Beach. BUT the highlight of Barbados for me was when I left it for a day trip to the Grenadines. I LOVE the Grenadines. (Especially, Tobago Cays, Palm Island, and little tiny Mopion.)

I love the Virgin Islands. The beach at Jost Van Dyke is stunning. The Baths are extremely cool. St. John is gorgeous. The nice thing about Tortola, is you can easily hop around all over these for the day. VI has little cays (like a little Gilligan's Island) with nothing but a beach bar on it. You get a boat (plenty of day trips, and some have water taxis) and go hang out. The water there is gorgeous. Especially at Jost Van Dyke. The beaches are in coves, not long stretches. Boy are these islands scenic. I can't think of any all inclusives, I know there is one on St. Thomas. As for casinos, sorry, I've never noticed about these islands. I know for sure DR has them though.

Atlgared, I responded once but will add that my wife and I couldn't decide ourselves so we ended up splitting the upcoming vacation between the BVI and Antigua. That option may work for you if you can't decide. You can fly direct from Tortola to Antigua on Liat airlines so it isn't much of a hassle to switch islands.

If you can wait until mid November to book I can give you a detailed trip report.

Plev...that would be excellent!! We aren't booking until January as this is our Christmas present to each other. So that would really help. It is so hard to choose though isn't it! If possible could you also take pics.

What hotel in Antigua are you staying?

We're staying at the Mongoose apartments in Tortola and at Sandals in Antigua. To be honest though, I wanted to go to Galley Bay but we're meeting 3 other couples in Antigua and it was the best all around fit for the group.

My brother has stayed at the Royal Antiguan and really liked it (except they don't have top shelf booze, or at least didn't when he was there in 2004)

Heh: There are any number of all inclusive resorts in Antigua and flights from Britain are twice a week. The crews from there stay at the Antigua Beach and Tennis Club. It has all you would need and great food.

We did last minute 2 years ago and for two weeks for two, it was 5200. canadian. For Brits it is so much cheaper because of the pound. For americans, it would be about the same as Canadians.

Barbados has been around forever and you can't go wrong there. Again, last minute is available.

Maybe give yourself some surprise flexibility and go where you get the best price at the last minute.

Good luck

I have been to DR a couple times..had a blast..great beaches.( BEAUTIFUL...we seriously would spend the whole day lying in the beach, talking drinking, etc..).the best resort i found was Punta Cana Princess, Paridius or Iberostar. HOWEVER we all are in our twenties and really enjoted the nightlife, unlimited drinks, casino etc..I wouldnt exactly say it is a place to go to really get to know the culture. The food is OKAY but yes everyone seems to get sick every time ( different spices..)Have you looked into Casa de Campo? Thats is another beautiful part of the DR I loved..a little more upscale.

I would recommend DR if you are more going for a good time with friends, not so much on exploring and adventure...

Actually right now me and my fiance are planning our honeymoon to the BVI this May as well...we FINALLY decided on Peter Island , a beautiful private resort. I have done a ton of research, and even though I have not been...I have been told by plenty that this is my best bet...Its a great mix between romance but adventure ( very easy to get around)

sorry I can not help you on your answer about barbados..

good luck!!!

If your looking for some fantastic beaches not to mention some of the finest dining in the Carribean, do yourself a favor and investigate Anguilla!!!
