5 ships in port on December 15th... what to do?

We are arriving in Tortola on Tuesday, December 15th. I had initially planned to catch the ferry on our own and head to Virgin Gorda to see the baths (which we have never seen). The number of ships in port scares the heck out of me with regard to number of people trying to get from Tortola to Virgin Gorda. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Think it's safe to chance it on our own or would we be better off with a tour company through the ship? Cost for 4 of us is substantially different. BLAH!

Are the baths a MUST SEE? Would we be better off heading to a place that might be less crowded?

Any thoughts would be helpful!

You can probably arrange for a private charter to the Bath's with just about any of the sailing and powerboat companies. Check with Patouche and Kuralu, they are very accommodating and easy to work with. Bare in mind chartering is expensive, unless you find a few other couples to share the boat with, the prices accommodate a lot of people generally. If you book a charter with someone you can ask around on your cruise ship and if you find another family/couple to share the charter expense with that's your best bet. I'm sure there's quite a few others in your situation that aren't going to be able to get on the ferry because it's so terribly packed that day. Ask around, call around, there's still options for you to see the Baths.

I also question how you know for sure what's the most reliable cruise ship schedule. We have been monitoring this since we are staying in a villa on Tortola over Christmas and New Yrs. According to Tripadvisor there will be 2 ships in Road Town on 12/24 and on www.cruisett.com/ports (from prior post) there will be 4-5. That's a big difference. Should we plan to stay at our villa on days with that many cruise ships? The idea of running into 1,000's of visitors from cruise ships is not appealing!
