Bug spray please!

What is the best bug spray for St. John? I've tried off with deet & cutter and neither worked. I was chewed alive and returned with bites all over my body. (I've been back for 2 weeks and I'm still scratching one or two) My bf got only one bite. Is there a special concoction that keeps them away? Taking Vitamin B supplements for a few weeks? I can't wait to go back but next time I would like to be more prepared. Thanks!
