Grand Cayman or another caribbean island?

I posted in general caribbean forum but thought i should move this post to here since cayman is at the top....

My friend and i had a great time in playa del carmen, went to the royal and really liked it but we want to get back to islands not sure IA is the way to go, we ate way too much! I think our favorite island is still USVI St. John (anguilla gets excellent marks too!) we are considering:

Grand Cayman

Barbados

St. Lucia

Tortola

Aruba

we don't really look for nightlife, we hang on the beach all day. a little shopping and site seeing good but not our main objective which is to chill out. We prefer renting a villa or condo so we can have our own space. We've been friends for over 40 years so although we can share a room we prefer not to. I like to snorkel and beach walk. My friend likes the water calm like a pool.... so any advice, including the calm shores of each island...

Grand Cayman is really not an AI place as there are many excellent restaurants and it is very safe and easy to get around. Few hotels as most prefer to rent a condo and there are MANY excellent ones from which to chose. Prime area is Seven Mile Beach.

Best beach area is in the central section and that is also the area that offers easy walking distance to many restaurants, some shopping, and also less than a 10 minute drive/bus to George Town. Northern SMB beach area also decent, but rockier and you will need a rental car to get to shopping & restauarnts. Southern area does not have as much beach and lots of ironshore.

Check caymanvacations.com for a good array of available condo rentals that include location, pictures, amenities, prices.

Grand Cayman sounds perfect for you. Seven Mile Beach is ideal for long walks, calm waters and good snorkeling in some areas. There are plenty of condos to choose from varying in price from very upscale to more moderately priced. Check some options on caymanvacations.com and learn about the different areas of Seven Mile Beach and the rental properties that are availble.

If you havent been to Turks and Caicos - look it up. The best relaxing, clear, beautiful beach I've ever seen. It sounds like its exactly what you're looking for. Specifically, Provodenciales.

I guarantee you will be able to chill out There are lots of condo rentals - The Sands, Royal West Indies, The Ocean Club - all on Grace Bay beach - the place you want to stay.

I have been to all of the places on your list with the exception of Aruba which is not on my personal list of "to-go's". All have a different flavor and are special in their own way. I have been to B'dos number of times and at one time thought of making it more permanent. It is the largest of places you mention and offers a central farming (sugar cane/banana strip) which is great to drive through. There are lovely beaches, the blowholes on the ocean side are fantastic, however it is very rough and I would stay on the ocean side. There are people hawking items, wanting to do your hair etc., all over. It didn't feel as safe as GC. St. Lucia, beautifully, hilly, great diving. The roads were a mess so we pretty much stayed at our resort below the Pitons. Took at water taxi to the old capital, it was horribly poor and run down. Tortola, lovely, hilly fun to take water taxis to other islands. Maybe a little harder to navigate by car. GC == we love wins hands down. Doesn't have hills, but is easy to get around, wonderful friendly people, safe, great restaurants, outstanding snorkeling!

I've been to Aruba and Grand Cayman. Both are very safe and very relaxing. Grand Cayman has more condos on the beach to choose from, and in my opinion, the snorkeling in GC is very good, while the snorkeling in Aruba is below average. Aruba is much further South, so they are very unlikely to get hit by a hurricane.

those who want nightlife/casinos/great beach/safety/friendliness ought pick Aruba. If you do not care about nightlife/casinos, but want great beach/safety/friendliness and excellent restaurants/ease of getting around there is no island better than Grand Cayman...and for 1st timers visiting GC I always suggest staying on SMB.

I agree with others who have suggested Turks & Caicos (Providenciales) or Grand Cayman. Best beaches on each are Seven Mile Beach (GC) and Grace Bay Beach (Provo). Almost all of the accommodations on GBB are condo resorts, and GC also offers a number of condos. Both islands have calm water (a lot of the time) and offer good snorkeling. GC has more shopping and nightlife.

As a frame of reference, besides Provo and GC, of the places you mentioned, I have been to Anguilla, Barbados, and St. Lucia; have considered but chose another destination instead of Aruba; and have Playa del Carmen and St. John on my list for future consideration. I have liked all these places, but my favorites are Provo and Anguilla.

Grand Cayman is great for what you are looking for, though 7 mile beach can get a little crowded when the cruise ships are in. Provo is a great fit for you as others have mentioned and I would also say Torotla. Also consider one of the "out" islands of the Bahamas (not Nassau or Freeport) if you want the ultimate chill out experience.
