transfer between Cayman Air & AA Miami

Has anyone flown from GC on Cayman Air to Miami & then transferred on to a AA flight? I was wondering if once you clear customs & immigration, do you have to collect your luggage & then proceed to AA to check in for the AA flight? Or does Cayman Air transfer your luggage to other airlines for you? Found a low price for returning to Boston during Christmas week for $377 compared to US Air $621 for 6 people. Is it worth considering this option given the savings?

Your luggage should be transfered for you

That is a great rate.

You have to go through customs and immigration as it is the first place of entry into the US. We haven't done it for a while -- hated the Miami connection, and now pretty much can fly direct from NY. They used to have the luggage waiting in a place where you just grabbed it and then passed it right along to another agent. It really was pretty quick. Immigration depends on how many flights are in at the same time. We hated the connection because it was tight timewise and the arrival/departure gates for NY were on opposite sides of that huge airport. Hopefully yours will be closer -- they do try to accomodate people on connecting flights. Good luck!

I do it all the time.

When you check in Cayman Airways should tag your bags to your final destination

When you get to Miami:

First stop is Immigration/Passport control.

Second stop is Customs. You MUST pick up all your luggage before exiting Customs.

Immediately after you exit Customs, look left. This is where you drop of your bags for your next flight(s).

If for some reason Cayman Air can't tag your bag to your final destination, then there is an AA counter to the right as you exit Customs.

Oh and a reminder.

If you purchase any duty free liquids in the departure lounge in GCM, make sure you put them in your checked luggage before you drop them off in Miami as you will need to go through security again to get to your gate

When you are traveling TO GCM on a different airline and then connecting to Cayman Air, do you still have to pick up your luggage and check in at the ticket counter in the concourse? We used to have to do that and it was a pain.
