Where to stay other than SMB in Grand Cayman in July

Hi! We are a family of five traveling to GC the first week in July. Some of us will be diving and some of us will not. We generally like to be a little bit off the beaten path, and would prefer to stay in a house or villa rather than a condo. Can anyone advise about the various options on GC besides seven mile beach?

We would like for the folks who aren't diving to have a few options for snorkeling, browsing, lunching without a car while the divers are off doing their thing.

Thank YOu!!

Stephanie

You can start your search on caymanvacations.com, caymanvacation.com, etc. Rum Point might be a great choice for your group. Please keep in mind that your non-diving guests should have the car. A dive boat can pick up the divers, there are not many options for shore diving away from the west side of the island, and once you leave the central/northern SMB areas a car is a necessity unless they just want to hang on the beach. Another option which is on the west side might be the West Bay area, however, once again, those not on the boat, should have the car. Many dive ops will arrange pick up by van depending on where you are staying (ie in the more populated areas). Hope this helps as a started. There are a few options for eating right at Rum Point like Kaibo and the Rum Point Restaurant (the latter which gets packed on cruise ship days) but in terms of browsing they would just be walking along the beach or on residential streets. The snorkeling bit is easy!!!

Thank you so much for your informative reply. Our non divers are also non drivers, but easily satisfied if they can walk to some snorkeling and maybe a lunch spot or ice cream place. we are open to staying in the smb area, but generally prefer a chance to see the island in it's more natural state.

"options snorkeling, browsing, lunching..."

These are all excellent reasons to reconsider SMB. In July (like most of the year) SMB is uncrowded and the beach is superior to almost anywhere else on the island considered "off the beaten path."

Most of the proper villa rentals will be located on the North Side and East End districts of the island. These areas are also the least developed and certainly less manicured than Seven Mile Beach and the surrounding environs. However, as others have advised a car is pretty much essential for these areas.

There are a few villas and homes for rent in West Bay, which is closer to many of the amenities the majority of tourists flock to. You can check out what vacation rental options are under TA's vacation rentals or a site like VRBO. With West Bay, the non-drivers have the option of utilizing the public mini-bus system to get around the George Town-Seven Mile Beach-West Bay corridor during the day.

Nevermind the Fishbones villa, it is listed under the incorrect location. The lack of other homes around in one of the pictures made me look twice. Reading the listing I see it is located in East End.

To find a rental "off the beaten path" and also have access to shopping, lunch spots, snorkeling for the non-divers/non-drivers is a bit of a challenge. West Bay or Northern SMB are your best location bets. I know of a

2 bed/ 2.5 bath home located adjacent to Cemetery Reef/beach that might fit the bill and be available for your dates. Address is 22 Swift Lane and it is Listing #28519 @ www.vacationhomes.com.

May I ask what you see as the difference between a house and a condo? Is it that it has to stand-alone? In other words townhouse-style houses are not what you are looking for? Or are you trying to avoid the large complexes?

The term "Condo" on Grand Cayman has a very exact definition - it could be a bunch of stand-alone houses/villas or a tower block on a property where there are shared facilities (like swimming pools, tennis courts etc.). There are legal entities (called STRATA Corporations) that have the job of managing the sites, but not the individual properties, which are often privately-owned. The only difference for me between come of the condo places and a villa/house is that there are these shared resources (which are often nicer than anything an individual non-STRATA property would have).

I have stayed in a 3-bedroom townhouse on Grand Cayman that felt just like a home in the USA (only a lot nicer) but which is officially a condo.

Just trying to get some clarification as to what your needs are for this. :)

Fishbones is on the Queen's Highway between Old Man Bay and East End, not in West Bay.

OOPS!
