Where to stay

My husband and I, along with one other, couple are planning on going to Grand Cayman in June or July and are thinking of staying at one of the condos. None of us have been there and have no idea where to stay. It'll just be the 4 of us, we would like a 2 bedroom condo, preferably close to a couple restaurants, don't need top of the line, but would like something nice. Something with a pool and nice beach. Also, should we rent a car? We're just planning on doing the stingray tour and possibly one other excursion, otherwise, will be lounging by pool/on beach. Sorry if this is vague~I'm new to this site...

Begin your research by checking caymanvacations.com.

It will give you an overview of the different sections of Seven Mile Beach, plusses and minuses of each area and links to pictures and rates of all of the properties that offer rental condos. Generally, the Northern end is quiet, has a more "tropical" feel, is removed from commercialism, has nice beaches but not within walking distance to restaurants. The central section has great beaches and is within walking distance to almost anything. The Southern end is also conveniently located but the beaches there are smaller and often rockier than Central or Northern Seven Mile Beach. June/July is a good time to take advantage of reduced nightly rates.

When you find some properties that interest you please feel free to ask for advice or recommendations. Also, I would add that while the properties vary in price, age and amenities, they are all clean, well regulated and cared-for properties so no fear of pcking a "dump".

Thanks for the response! That site helps a lot. I think I've narrowed it down (so far anyway), Treasure Island, Lacovia, and Discovery Point. Those all look pretty nice.

If you move off SMB, your will save enough money to rent a car and be able to see all of Grand Cayman.

Check out www.caymanvcation.com

Hi Beachbum,

We have stayed at Discovery Point 3 times. Will stay there next trip too. It is very comfortable for 2 couples. All units are beachfront. We always enjoy having our morning coffee and meals on the screened-in deck overlooking the water & enjoying the sunsets without bugs (LOL).

The beach is beautiful and there is plenty of shade and chairs no matter what time of day. Of the three trips, there have never been more than a dozen other people on the beach at once.

Only negative is getting into the water. Since Ivan the entry is very rocky (BIG ROCKS), rather than sandy. Once you figure out how to navigate that, no problem mon. Or you can walk next door to Christopher Columbus Condos and enter there. It's nice and sandy there. We have done that on more than one occasion when we've had a few beverages. LOL

Happy Travels.

I should have added that a car is a must at DP.

Of the three you currently have in mind, I think you will like Lacovia best. Great part of central SMB, easy walking distance to many restaurants in all price ranges; do rent a car for at least a day or 2 so you can see the rest of the island at your own pace:) Since Lacovia is so conveniently located and your prime focus is on lounging at pool/beach, you won't need a rental car for your entire stay in order to see everything & also access shopping, restaurants, etc.

We have stayed at Lacovia and had friends stay there. It is a lovely property with lots of space on the best part of SMB. Within in feet of the watersports shop (waverunners, parasailing, shuttle to Stingray City boat, etc) on the beach side, and easy walking to some really nice restaurants on the street side. It is on the central part of SMB, which is the widest, sandiest part. The units are privately owned and those we have seen have all been beautifully decorated. The garden is mature and lovely. Great place overall! Request a beachfront if you choose it. Check out car rental at Andy's (they have a coupon online). Even if you don't get one for the whole time, it might be nice for a day or two. However, you don't need one at this location and the taxis are very fair and friendly!

I agree that Lacovia is a lovely property and the best choice of the 3 you have selected if you want to be able to walk to shops and restaurants. I also agree that renting a car for even a couple of days will give you the freedom to tour the Island and visit some sites. Ask for a ground floor, beachfront unit if your budget will support that. There is nothing nicer than being able to open your slider and step out to the beach and being able to sit on your patio looking straight out to the Caribbean Sea.

I vote for Seven Mile Beach (Lacovia is located there), it's my favorite part of the island. I also suggest renting a car for at least a day - I was able to rent one for around $35/day through Avis (in December). There is also a bus that runs along Seven Mile Beach from/to George Town - it's $2.00 C.I. ($2.50 US) per ride (I don't know how late it runs, but it runs every 15 mins or so while it does).

I also would recommend staying on Seven Mile Beach for your first trip. It's a great base to explore the rest of the island from. You should definitely hire a car for one or two days - drive up to Rum Point the long way round, i.e. via East End, which is a really nice drive. The drive takes approx an hour and I think it's really scenic along the coast. You can come back the shorter route (if you see a road map you'll see what I mean).
