GC beach suites - snorkel from beach?

we will be traveling to GC in a couple weeks for a short 4 day trip. Does anyone snorkel from the beach at the Beach Suites? I'm sure that their are much better places to go snorkeling but for a couple amateurs would it be OK?

Do most places accept US currency?

thx!

Not the best snorkeling in front of the Beach Suites. Head down to the left (facing water) towards the Marriott and a bit further where you see iron shore/rock for better snorkel conditions.

Yes, USD are accepted Check under the top questions section for details on conversion rates, etc...

Beaches are public, hotel and condo facilities (chairs, palapas, etc...) are not. If you out grow the previous spots, you can try Eden Rock right in the center of George Town or Cheeseburger Reef in front of the Burger King for better nearby snorkeling. Neither are walkable from Beach Suites but you can take a cab or the public bus if you don't have a rental car.

You certainly can! The beach is public up to the high water mark and you are free to walk along the beach for miles, if you choose. Long beach strolls are part of the fun for us, and we often snorkel in front of other properties, we just do not use the beach facilities that are reserved for their guests.

You can definitely snorkel right there. If you go out a little bit there are some nooks and crannies where you will find smaller fish, but you have a decent chance of seeing rays and other bigger guys in sandy bottom where they can swim freely. Over the years we have seen turtles etc., (have used that beach for years). Right down from there is the Governor's House and the snorkeling in front of that is very good (lots of nooks and crannies for protection from the big guys). There is a popular dive site a little further out of the same name. Just ask the guys at the Red Sail beach shop at the BS to point you in the right direction.

Another snorkel spot you may enjoy is Wreck of the Cali - a real shipwreck close to the shore in George Town. You could take a bus (or a taxi) to get there: it's very near the bus terminal which is behind Dairy Queen.

If you go to Diver's Down you can get in the water right behind their dive shop and it's an easy swim - a couple of hundred feet or so - out to the wreck site in about 30 feet of water. You'll come to the bow section first, then you can keep going toward the stern which is further away from the shore but has better coral / reef formations and fish life around that end. Diver's Down is in between the waterfront restaurants Rackhams and Hammerheads. There's more info on the wreck on:

thanks for all the replies, since we're only going to be there for a couple days off the beach sounds good to me. I think that idea of sticking my head in the water for a couple days is the real goal.

We're looking forward to getting away.

thanks again.....
