medical facilities

considering bringing our 11 year old grandson who is diabetic/celiac for a week in November. We feel VERY comfortable regarding finding plenty of gluten free options in stores and restaurants. (We researched the stores on our last visit 2 years ago). His mother is concerned about the medical facilities on the island (she has not been to GC yet).

We assured her they are top quality given the British/American influences and all the toursim ---not 3rd world as some other islands(Dominican/Jamacia).

Any suggestions or experiences we could pass on to her to help concerns?

Used the services of Chrisie Tomlinson private hospital for other needs and were satisfied with the care. Bit of a wait since it was a local holiday and half the island was convinced they had the swine flu at the time...

Miami is a short flight away should serious care be needed.

My daughter moved to the island a few months ago. She had to go to the emergency room after being there for a short while. Ironically her dad and I went from the airport to the hospital (instead of surprising her at work) to get her. The staff at the hospital were delightful, professional and extremely caring. Hearing she was new and didn't have a primary care yet, they really were wonderful giving her names, addresses etc. Her scripts were filled right at the hospital. The overall experience was extremely positive and completely reinforced our feeling that as we get even older, GC is the place we want to be. Hope this helps a bit!! Will add that the whole experience was much better than my last one in an emergency room in Baltimore with her -- absolutely no comparison.

I've spent a lot of time in a lot of medical facilities on island, it is certainly not 3rd world, though the most specialist treatments must still be conducted abroad. I hope you never need to use them but feel safe in the knowledge that they are there and more than adequate

i spent a night in the ICU at the Cayman Hospital and they did everything that my doctor at home thought should be done. All bills needed to be paid and then my insurance reimbursed me when I submitted the bill.

Our 4 year old had a violent allergic reaction to a bug bite last year in the east end. We were scared $hitless. The ambulance crew and emergency room doctors and nurses were absolutely first rate. I am forever in their debt.

I had a trip to the emergency room and an overnight stay a few years back. I would definitely rate it as top-notch care. I did have to put it on my credit card but the charges were much less than they would have been at home (at that time anyway), and my insurance reimbursed it completely. Be sure to get copies of everything to submit if you should happen to need to get care there.

You can't go wrong at the George Town Hospital. It's at the end of Hospital Road, has an incredible emergency and ICU facility and top notch facilities.

My 14 year old son had an ear problem when we were there last summer. We found a pediatritian in Georgtown who was very nice and got us right in when we called. I cannot remember her name, but we found the office by searching the phone book in our condo.
