Where to stay

We are heading back to the Caymans in November. It will be our third trip. We have always stayed at the Villa's of Galleon. The things we love about the Villas is that is its quiet and that the beach is beautiful and has some shade and no rocks on beach entry. Also, we like to walk to the Ritz or Westin for a drink or a bite to eat. This year we were thinking of trying someplace that has a pool. Maybe Discovery Point. What is the beach like? Is it rocky? Any other suggestions in the North area of SMB? We have two boys, 11 and 14..

We love Discovery Point, but you definitely need a car. Nothing really walkable for dinner or drinks. The complex is quiet with plenty of shade without having to go out there at 7am to save a spot. We have never had any trouble at any time of day. We usually dive in the AM, come back and have lunch at the condo, then head out to the beach. Water entry is a bit tricky (large rocks), but the beach itself isn't rocky at all. Once you figure out the entry path, it's all sandy bottom. We never use water shoes. Or you can enter next door at Christopher Columbus. Also a great property, but we like having the screened in balcony at DP.

The further north you go the rockier the beach will be therefore it is quieter and there are less restaurants and shops. The opposite is true as you head more centrally into SMB. So basically the best bet for what you are looking for that includes things in walking distance is to stay in condos that are more south on the northern end! Hope that makes some sense! Condo properties do not get crowded anywhere along the stretch anyway and as you are going in low season you can get some great deals across the board. Check out cicondos.com, caymanvacations.com caydirect.com, etc., and come back with questions about individual properties when you have narrowered down your search by budget etc.

There are some really nice beaches in the northern part of SMB...London House, Heritage Club, Renaissance, Aqua Bay, Christopher Colombus, Anchorage. We have stayed at Discovery Point, and you can walk to the next complex for an easy entry.

Personally I think if you are happy with VoG, it makes sense to stay there again. It is a great location and beautiful beach. Also easy access to the Ritz and Westin water sports for your boys.

Casa Caribe has a pool...not a beachfront one, but nice to have. Balconies and patios there are screened in, which we really like and location is central SMB where beach conditions and water entry is like VOG.
