Medical assistance and Hospital question in Nevis

We are looking for a beach vacation, traveling with an infant, and just wondered if anyone has information on the level of medical skill/service available on the island of Nevis if it were needed in a worst case scenario. Has anyone had experience with the hospitals or medical services on the island? Thank you for your help.

Our only experience with the hospital on Nevis was to deal with a suspect, ear infection/swimmer's ear. It turned out to be a build-up of wax/whatever that a simple treatment of warm, mineral oil dealt with the problem. The hospital is more akin to a walk-in clinic here in Canada but with very kind, attending medical staff....just don't count on a high level of sophistication for more than "ordinary" attention. There are highly qualified doctors but not always available or "on Island". The level of attention and sophistication is better at the St. Kitts hospital, I've heard from colleagues and island friends. We never-the-less travel with a good first aid kit and....a "gold plated" medical insursance plan than includes Med-Vac. No reason to be other than prudent relative to your needs, activities and length of stay. After nine years of visiting Nevis for stays of a month or more, only the "ear thing" has been our personal interaction but we've heard of many satisfied outcomes from others dealing with local medical attention. No worries, i'd say. Cheers, Richard.

Does your child have a serious medical condition or are you just concerned about routine care if the child comes down with a cold or minor ailment while you are traveling?

If you child has a serious condition you should consult with your family physician BEFORE you travel - he/she will be the best person to advise you.

As Viceroy says there is a hospital and some very competent doctors on Nevis but the equipment at the facility itself and the level of care you will receive is nowhere near what you are use to getting "back home". For things like colds, flu, cuts and scrapes you'll be just find. Serious medical conditions are another matter. I can tell you this, most Ex-pats living on the island (and many locals) go off-island (usually back to the US, Canada, England or Europe) for treatment of major illnesses.

So, if that "Worse Case" scenario you describe occurs you'll really want to evacuate the patient back to the US. So, if that's a major concern for you be sure to have medical evacuation insurance (it can cost upwards of $30,000US for a medi-vac flight).

For what t is worth, you'll find similar conditions on most Caribbean Islands.
